So one of my pc got a virus on yesterday.(I think)
Windows xp sp2
What happens is that when I restart the system hangs in windows. All programs starts up and then boom hangs.
Also booting into safe mode also hangs half way.
Cpu Temp according to bios is 24 degrees.
I know there are stuff I could do more but just for fun want to use unbuntu.

So I was hoping is there a way to scan for virus using the live cd of unbuntu?

I was just about to RAS :p

I guess it's possible to do this, but it's not really the best solution...

Your best bet would likely be to fix Windows using a repair. If it IS a virus, it could have corrupted some system files that are needed for startup, and repair would fix this.

Yeah I know the windows way that's an easy fix but how about the Linux way?

But in any case the pc is fixed.

There is a virus scanner for linux... but never needed one. Dunno how to get viruses in Linux :D

The reason for virus scanners in Linux is primarily for mailbox setups and file servers that forwards to Windows PC's.

You scan all mail, and presto, no virii on the network. However in "recent" years there has been rescue CD's designed to troubleshoot an infected PC, either by LiveCD or over the network (ideal circumstances) but also from a separate partition.

How do you scan a windows partition?
Frist, you need to mount it with full read/write permission.

Then, depending on the app you are using simply run scanner on the partition like in this example:
(There are three virus scanner that I know of in Linux, bitdefender-console, clamav, f-prot. Lets use clamav as example)
clamscan -r -l /where/partition/is/mounted

That is that.

Just to add to MyWorld's post:

clamscan -r -l clamscan-`date +%d%m%y_%Hh%M`.txt <directory to scan recursively>

Note that the logfile specified after "-l" must be located in a directory where you have write access.

I use antivir and clamav, and one nice thing about clamav is the local mirror, so you can continue keeping the definitions up-to-date when you're capped on int.
