How do you hold your steering wheel?

I have a problem with the 12'o clock idea. The way I see it it is an inherently unstable position. Meaning that should anything happen, your hands can't counterbalance each other, and you could easily turn the steering wheel way too much. Think of a ball on top of a hill - as long as it is in perfect balance it will stay there, but the moment it loses balance it will start rolling, gaining momentum as it goes. I much prefer two hands on the wheel, and not both at the same place. Generally I'd go for the traditional 10-2 idea.
 
Mine is 9-3 when long distance driving (invariably doing a fair bit of speed). Also means I am able to use the gear shift pedals very easily.

Town driving – various positions depending on mood.

9-3 as well. In town, I use 3 only.

10-2 always felt weird and uncomfortable.

I drive an '06 Polo my steering wheel looks as such: Image
I've got two positions basically:
hands at 9 and 3 with thumbs over the bars for traffic, cornering or when going fast.
then when I'm cruising on a nice long stretch, left elbow is resting on inner door arm rest and holding 4/5ish by the bar.
and right hand is assisting from bottom while resting on legs.

I never liked the 10 2 position. Just feels weird!

Not sure what you mean by that, but your thumbs shouldn't be held around the rim of the wheel - they should rest on the wheel. I'm more of a 10 and 2 o'clock holder, myself.
 
right elbow sticks out the driver side, right thumb grabbing the steering wheel. If I don't write sms with my left hand then I hang my arm out the passenger window... go figure it out

no I grip my wheel since I like to corner fast on occasion an the way I sit is: If I sit back and put my arms out straight over the wheel, my wrists sit at 12 just, So that when I corner (9-3) i can basically turn my arms over each other without letting go of the wheel. Just adds more control with the thumbs inside of the wheel. I know they should rest on the rim, but that is only for slow maneuvers :)
