How do you qualify for a Vodacom contract?

Thanks ic, never studied the 4U contract before, Weekender is just a monthly account package, use during the month and pay at the end. mmm... rates on 4U is pretty much the same as weekender.
The 4U contract is basically a contract where you only pay for what you use, there are no included monthly minutes, so if you make zero calls in a particular month, then you don't pay a subscription fee for calls that month, and the nice thing about the 4U contract is you can add bundled services [not monthly minutes] onto the contract [either Bolt-On or Ad-Hoc], if your friends can get credit approval for a 4U contract, they might just decide that it suites their needs without the bother of migrating to the Weekender contract, IMO the 4U contract is worth trying.
Have they considered taking a post-paid contract on a different network? I know cell c offers a few of those at sub-hundred a month rates. Good enough for emergencies. But cell C network not the most reliable. How about a 2way system or CB radio. Give one to your neighbouring farmer in case of emergency...
Does CellC provide coverage out in the sticks for farming communities?

They want to keep their pre-paid Vodacom number, and the porting option doesn't seem too stable. They do have a long distance radio, but the farmers in the area, even though they have radios, isn't using it much anymore because of cellphones :D BTW, after I explained all the options to them, they decided to stay with prepaid, I've set up Standard Bank cellphone banking for them and at least they can top-up online now.

You could roam on VC couldn't you?
Yes, but what's the point of dealing with a third-party [i.e. CellC] over Vodacom's network, why roam when one can deal with a network that actually covers one's area [i.e. Vodacom & presumably also MTN]?

Also not everyone has a tri-band phone [or at least one that supports 1900MHz] to get coverage from a CellC base-station.

I agree, I wouldn't touch Cell C, was just saying. :)

I might be migrating to cell c in the next couple of days. I really don't want to, but ATM it's the only network with the LG viewty on offer and it's a bit pricey cash. up to 6k. ah the compromises to be made :(

Problem is you won't be able to use HSDPA on Cell C. If its available in retail shops you could always take one of those other contract offers that gives you shopping vouchers and use that to buy it cash?

Credit card

Why dont they get a credit card from nedbank. im sure they are working and have a bank account (for 3 months bank statements).

if they do qualify, go to autopage cellular with your credit card, i.d., proof of address and a statement from the bank reflecting your credit card limit and you will get the contract in a few minutes.... YES ITS AS EASY AS THAT!!!

try it out.... will take about a week thou

With regards to the 4U contract, there is no distinction in terms of credit rating between qualifying for a 4U contract or a Weekender. That's because the user can always upgrade to weekender after being on a 4U contract for a few months. That's at least what I was told a year ago.

When I applied they told me either you qualify for a post paid line or not, regardless of the package. Maybe the shop assistant was clueless. Surely there's a distinction between Talk500 and Weekender?

Ok I understand now :).

No idea how the credit vetting works, but it would make more sense - especially with the new credit act, to make a decision based on:
  1. Credit Rating
  2. Can the customer afford the monthly contract subscription

I suppose you could easily run up a bill equal to the Talk 500 subs. on Weekender.

I just got a weekender contract from Vodacom. They wanted 2 payslips and a bank statement. Credit score/rating didn't seem to be an issue.

I opened a cheque account a month ago and my salary gets paid into this account. More than one person including the man at the bank told me this is the easiest way to get a higher credit rating. That same day I applied for a credit card at the bank but only got a Visa Electron because I didn't have a credit rating at all. (No bills or any store cards)

Around the same time I applied for a Virgin Money credit card. I needed 1 payslip, no credit rating? and a 3 month bank statement. It takes about 3 weeks to get the card, but the people that phoned me was very friendly and efficient. I think in most cases getting a card from Virgin will be easier than getting one from a bank.

I think there will be a credit limit. My contract which was in my fathers name (ProCall 120) had a bill credit limit of R1500.00. I presume a weekender on a persons name with a low credit score or high risk rating would have a low credit rating.

Anyways.. I am raising this topic again because I just started working for the first time. July was my start of employment. I received a Standard Bank Blue Credit Card 4 months ago. So I am wondering if I had to apply for a MTN Anytime 200 @ R400.00 per month.. what the chances of me getting this would be.

hmm.
