How do you share a scanner on a network?

How do you have a scanner on a network in Xp? The scanner under the control panel does not have the share options that the printers have

plug the usb cable into your LAN hub?

hehe... no seriously... I don't know if you can share a scanner... the whole idea of a scanner is that you kinda have to be there to insert and swap pages... so it makes remote scanning kind of redundant.

I have heard of it... but can't say that it is all that common... if your proprietary scanner software does not support it then I dunno how you gonna do it!!!

Do you have a Symbian cellphone? Install the scanR software on your Symbian cellphone with a camera... then you can remotely scan anything!

It is actually a multifunction printer/copier/scanner/fax - Canon MF5650. I have already sorted the sharing of the printer and fax options.

The HP office series with network support allow network scanning.

I'm sure it's possible to write a script / find some app that will auto-scan an image you put in at a certain DPI and put it on a shared folder, which might be good enough for most needs?

Interesting thought that, and it would be absolutely perfect. In the control panel, the scanner options does have an option to run something when the start button is pressed in scan mode on the machine.

I don't know how to write a script though.

I still don't get the point though. You still have to walk over to where the scanner is to put the document in it to scan it. Why not just scan it from that computer while you are there?

That machine is connected through a wall to my boss's pc. So when he is in a meeting you don't have physical access to the pc but you do have access to the Canon machine because it is in another office.

I'm interested in scanning using the auto document feeder as it is much quicker.

aaah... I see... so you can load it up in the morning and then do a bunch of batch scanning... gotcha.

next possible solution... get a USB 2.0 repeater cable and run the USB cable from the scanner through the wall, then just put it back to other computer later when you are done with all the scanning. Might be a cheaper option. USB extender/Repeater cables are about R180.00

It would just be simpler to buy a HP 6313 or L7680 as they are both Ethernet scanner multifunction. It is likely to be cheaper than the software and with the L7680 you get duplex scanning as well.

I've managed to use a work-around:

The MF Toolbox allows you to auto-save. I set it to save in a shared folder. The I created a batch file to move the file from boss's pc to the one I'm working on.

Only issue is that MF Toolbox will pop up on boss's pc when scanning and shared folder opens showing scanned documents saved therein.

Thanks. You get what you pay for I guess - I tried it and it was throwing up errors and messed up the printer/fax driver requiring a re-install.

My work-around solution worked far better

I know ... I also tried to install it. Didn't work for me either

I guess a multifunction device is a better solution.

Whats the printer/scanner/copier IP Address? Do you assign one for that printer? I don't know canon very well.

Surely with the IP Address you could get any TWAIN scanning software to link to it?

I could get an HP to scan via it's own software and via some old scansoft utility that was on an old win2000 PC. I just needed the IP.
