Okay so my "friendly" telkom techy tells me that my connectivity issues are because of my lightning struck ADSL modem. Pointing out to him that i havent had lightning in the area since summer was a logic step to far for him so I left it at that.

The question I have is how do I test an ADSL modem to check if my connectivity issues relate to faulty hardware. The think works fine as a wireless router and I can connect to it using a LAN cable but connecting to the net is non functional.

Any thoughts folks?

Only two ways is to plug it into a ADSL line you know is working, or to use a working modem on your line. Test with a neighbor or mate's line/modem.

The only way that you can test is to get a different ADSL modem to test your ADSL line with.

I once had a surge through my line which was not caused by lightning but was due to a hardware fault at the exchange (techie's words). It blew the port and fried my router but the interesting thing is that the router was only partly fried and still had LAN functionality but the phone line port was toast. Then again I've had similar failures with routers on numerous occasions with lightning strikes. Where I stay is a serious lightning magnet in summer time.

if it's a router/modem combo there should be a diagnosis page in the UI to check for a pass or fail. but as the other posters said, testing with an other line is a better idea
