How do you thank a relative who has given you something massive?

For example, how would you thank someone who has bought you a car, or a house? Or given/lent you a large amount of money?

Obviously, it is silly to spend thousands thanking them - but you can't just walk up to them and go oh, yeah, thanks for the car.

Ideas?

thank them in the what you see fit.

Do what you think is right and appropriate

Hopefully, one day, I'll get to find out. :(

Invite them out for dinner or to your place for dinner. And send a personalised card to them and their family as well. Whatever you do, from their perspective it should come across as a heartfelt thank you.

So spill - what were you given and by who? This also matters...

+1

... and remember it need not be a material thank you gift. Your humble gratitude is worth more than what money can buy.

The best way to thank them is by never disappointing them. Be worthy of the investment they made in you.

sell whatever they gave you and take all of youz to VEGAS BABY!!!!

If you're a girl and the present is from a male, a few bj's is the commonly accepted way to thank someone.

The same honest and sincere "thank you" you should give when someone offers you something small, a small present, or gesture and maybe even love and compassion. It not the size that counts its the appreciation.

if you were the giver, how would you like it to be reciprocated?

I think that the moment you want something in return it's no longer a gift so much as it is emotional blackmail.

I have a family member who once called me "ungrateful" because I didn't express gratitude in some obvious way that she evidently wanted and expected. Needless to say that's a book I've closed for the rest of my life.

If someone has given you a gift and it is from the bottom of their heart, then all you need to do is appreciate it. If someone has given you a gift and you get any signs from them that suggest emotional blackmail, tell them, "Thanks, but I'd rather acquire it on my own." If it gets to that, it will whittle away at you and if you care about those people, it will also destroy the relationship you have with them.

Since I don't believe that everyone in the world is a vindictive two-faced self-gratifying cow, don't worry about it unless you have to :p

For now you are limited to showing your sincere gratitude in a meaningful way. Someday you may be called upon and afforded the opportunity to repay the favour in a small or significant way. A weakness of the human condition is that gratitude wanes with time, never forget your good fortune.

i'm guessing it wasn't a material thing he got, he got a kidney. and here you all are thinking ka-ching. LOL

I know of a similar situation: Substantial cash transferred in time of need. No monetary repayment was ever made afaik, but that person had the other's back from that point forward.

Also, if that person earned this asset/whatever through hard work then its likely that he/she knows that you have no way of repaying in kind.

I'd go with one decent thank you (like that dinner idea) & then showing appreciation wherever an opportunity presents itself.

Oh and:
Don Corleone: We have known each other many years, but this is the first time you've come to me for counsel or for help. I can't remember the last time you invited me to your house for a cup of coffee, even though my wife is godmother to your only child. But let's be frank here. You never wanted my friendship. And you feared to be in my debt.
Bonasera: I didn't want to get into trouble.
Don Corleone: I understand. You found paradise in America. You had a good trade, you made a good living. The police protected you and there were courts of law. So you didn't need a friend like me. Now you come and say "Don Corleone, give me justice." But you don't ask with respect. You don't offer friendship. You don't even think to call me "Godfather." You come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married and you ask me to do murder - for money.
Bonasera: I ask you for justice.
Don Corleone: That is not justice. Your daughter is alive.
Bonasera: Let them suffer then as she suffers.
[the Don is silent]
Bonasera: How much shall I pay you?
[the Don turns away dismissively, but Bonasera stays on]
Don Corleone: Bonasera, Bonasera, what have I ever done to make you treat me so disrespectfully? If you'd come to me in friendship, this scum who ruined your daughter would be suffering this very day. And if by some chance an honest man like yourself made enemies they would become my enemies. And then, they would fear you.
Bonasera: Be my friend... Godfather.
[the Don at first shrugs, but upon hearing the title he lifts his hand, and a humbled Bonasera kisses the ring on it]
Don Corleone: Good.
[He places his hand around Bonasera in a paternal gesture]
Don Corleone: Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, consider this justice a gift on my daughter's wedding day.
[a gratified Bonasera offers his thanks and leaves
]
