i know how to download from a torrent site but how does this actually work? and how do i upload anything to a torrent site? Also is there anyway to download stuff quicker from the torrent site?

i use BitTorrent and i download mostly from Mininova.

From what I understand Torrent sites don't actually do anything, they just provide a tracker for the user in the form of a bit file. This tracker can then check to see which users have the same torrent available and download from that person. Torrent sites don't actually store any of the files; they just supply the files for the end user to communicate with peers.

You can create a torrent using your torrent app, such as bitlord. You just click create, select the file you want to share, and I think that is about it. Never done it though so there may be another step involved somewhere here.

As for speeding up torrents, there isn’t really much you can do. If you lucky enough someone in SA will have the same torrent and be seeding it, thus you will get much higher DL rate. Otherwise you dl'ing international and hence the slow speeds.

Ok, well BitTorrent or any other Torrent Bassed Client uses Advanced Packet Technology along with Trackers through TCP/IP Handshaking Protocols which send & receive all the bits (0 / 1) needed to complete the File on your FAT32/NTFS based HDD, through various Internet and Intranet Gateways, routed through your modem and ISP from one Peer (You) and another Peer(s) (Somebody else). Your Local client seeds all the necessary bits needed based on advanced algorithms which are monitored for the scarcity of the file in question when upon completion of the packets already received, on your side. When you do not seed, and download more than you can chew, you are considered a leacher.

hope that clears it all up.
bwhahahaha!

oh i see. I'll give it a go to try and create my own torrent. I use the international torrent sites that i know i tried and tested as i dont know of any SA torrent sites. So i guess i will be downloading for ever on some items.....
Thnx for the info.

Thnx Keeper. It makes a bit more sense now.

How do i know if i am seeding and not just leaching? I dont just close/stop the links that i have downloaded. I keep them open for a while or until i go home then only do i close the link.

When you see its uploading after its finished downloading ;) It should show you what your ratio is in the torrent client like utorrent, bitcomet or whatever you use. Generally it's good ethics to seed back what you downloaded so a ratio of 1 in other words :)

Quiz for Keeper

Keeper
If you seed a torrent doesn't it go to a server or something? What if there are several leeechers and no other seeders? I know that when I have seeded the uploading is a continuous process. Hence it doesnt seem that I'm waiting for anyone to download my unique pieces.

Leechers do still upload while they download so even if there are no seeders if there are enough leechers with all different parts of the full file then everyone can still download the full file.

Are there any SA Torrent sites?

Hi Folks,

There must be local sites....

Anyone care to share?

Thanks
Linda

Well I think you should read this. It helped me a lot when I first started... :)

http://www.johntp.com/2006/04/19/how-to-increase-download-speeds-of-utorrent/

Torrent speeds are a common problem, are not always because we are in South Africa. I max my line out all the time at +- 450KB/sec using torrents, you just need to have the right settings and the right torrents/trackers.

I think the most important fact that is NOT mentioned here is Port Forwarding. This, from my experience, make the biggest difference and you must set it up on your Router.

Also, I have used a lot of different torrent clients, and do yourself a favour and use uTorrent. Dont waste your time with anything else.

Regarding creating a torrent, as Grimspoon said its pretty simple. Just dont forget to enter the tracker when you create the torrent. This would be the tracker that the website is using, the one that you upload the torrent to.

Yes there is one local torrent site that comes to mind...

How does throttling the upload speed (bandwidth allocation) affect my download speed?

it is not advisable... but it depends on the people and the trackers you are connected to. Some trackers will punish you for throttling your uploads. Best is to rather cut off the torrent when you have seeded for 24 hours or uploaded the same amount.
