Also interestingly, when the sun sets and touches the horizon it's actually already below it. You are only able to see it due to its light being bent.

I remember a school teacher saying once "the average person can see upto 1KM".

But I learned, much later, that one could see far beyond that - depending on conditions obviously. For example, Table mountain is about 18Km, as the crow flies from Table Mountain.
