How far does you reserve fuel go?

@ Paul_S: What is your average speed to get such mileage?

Pretty good. My Astra 1.6i gets me just short of 600km on 50l, cruising highways mostly @ 140km/h. Reserve is about 50km. Ran out a while back, but pump was a bit further down the hill, so I just made it :) Properly empty, engine died about 100m before the station!

Average speed to get 650km on 52l is about 45km/h because of the peak traffic. I seldom exceed 120km/h because it's near impossible on the N1. 35km takes 45 minutes.
Average speed to get 800km on 55l is 100km/h to 110km/h.

I haven't actually run dry yet but I've been pretty close (take a corner and the engine dies).

I installed an uprated fuel pump in my car( which sits inside the tank) and you wouldn't believe the gunk that came out of the old one, and this was after only 10,000KM.

Thing is, the sediments wears out your fuel pump (which is usually made of plastic moving parts, to reduce noise). Usually the fuel pump sits before the fuel filter. E.g., its something like this: tbag filter -> fuel pump -> fuel filter. The tea bag keeps the bigger crap out of the fuel pump and it looks just like a tea bag lol.
 
On Top Gear when they drove those cars from Swizerland (iirc) and across England on one tank of diesel, the cars computers eventually indicated 0 miles left in the tank, but they still managed a few more clicks.
 
My reserve gets me abt 120-150kms. I get about 730kms on a 63l tank. I use to fill up as soon as there was 1/4 tank left with my Toyota Conquest. But since i can get up to 150kms on reserve with my BMW i fill up once the reserve light comes on and even stretch it a bit further occasionally. I hate driving with the reserve light on though. Whether u fill up now or 50kms later u still gonna pay the same price, not like theres a discount if u fill up when u have the last drop of fuel left in your tank. And i've also heard its not good to wait to fill up till u have the last drop left.

Funny enough, I had a 180i SE which also had such a good fuel economy - and that for a 1.8. Would sometimes stretch the tank to 4 days after the reserve light went on :wtf: - just necessary driving of course.

smaller, cheaper cars have smaller fuel tanks, thus smaller a 'reserve'

jeremy was driving a diesel Jag, which has an 75 or 80L tank.. makes sense it still had a bit of fuel left in it

on the flip side, some years ago a puegot indicated 45km range left, but sputtered to a halt a few metres later. it was in CAR magazine
 
i get about 60KM's on my GTI depending on driving style
and conditions (traffic, etc)
 
Why are you all testing how far your reserve tank goes? It's not like we live in a country where they aren't enough petrol stations on long stretches of highway or something.
 
OK i haven't really tested mine because every time i try i have to go some where then i fill it up. but i really want to know what to expect. can anyone who drive a golf give me an idea?

Could prevent all the stress of not knowing when to start panicking when stuck in the middle of nowhere.

polo 1.9tdi sportline, fuel light usually comes on when it says 50-60km left. but I've driven it to 0km before......porbably get 60km in the real world, ignoring how far it tells you you can go....also that 45 +7 explains why i usually can get 50 litres in at the pump.
