How graphics cards have evolved over the years

1988 – ATI VGA Wonder

ATI made a name for itself in the global graphics processor market with products like the VGA Wonder.

The card featured 16-bit colour support and 2D rendering.

16-bit colour in 1988? Pretty sure that's not possible. 'High Colour' (15bit and 16bit) consumer tech was introduced in the 90s.

Maybe, in '91 there was the S3 924 which was 24bit colour.

The Amiga 500 was 16bit wasn't it and that was late 80s?

You're confusing colour depth (16bit=65536 colours, with the CPU. The 68000 CPU had a 32bit instruction set with a 16bit external data bus & 24bit address bus. First Amiga came out in '85 and had 8bit colour with a special HAM mode yielding a 12bit (4096) colour space.

I'm not a big gamer but what stood out to me was the 3dfx voodoo, the ATi 9700 and the nVidia 8800.

Those were the cards mostly discussed on PCFormat.

Edit: I meant 8800.

My first setup.

Now have the two 580s

Next purchase will break this configuration since I'm now looking for a high performance NUC size pc.
