Hi there,

So i got myself the 10Gb 3G promo from 8ta, which has worked great for me so far, except for one thing...

I primarily got this deal so that i could log into my work server remotely and monitor/troubleshoot my network and various sites, but am not able to connect to my server remotely using VNC, with my 8ta 3G.

I can connect to the server over ADSL, but not from the 3G. An 8ta support consultant called me about the issue after i sent a message to them about it and followed up with me each day at 18h00 after i had tried various things during the course of each day. I was impressed with this oke, his name is Ashley... The necessary ports are open on my router at work, hence the ADSL connection working, and 8ta says that their APN is unrestricted by default, so my question is WTF is stopping me from connecting?

The issue was sent to backroom support to look into about 2weeks ago and i have not heard anything since. Does anyone know what i need to do to make remote connection over 8ta 3G work? Thanks in advance!

Maybe this is related, not sure, and I am no IT expert. I also have ADSL and 3G. For some reason I can only reach my work's network VPN by using the IP address. The URL just doesn't resolve correctly.

If you can still connect over ADSL, then it is not server issue. Not 100% sure, as server could do some sort of reverse lookup for which it opens another connection and this would fail. To be safe on your side I would try SIM from another network, just for testing.
The other thought is firewall on your PC. It can be different firewall settings for Ethernet connection to the router and for RAS, but because you are doing IT job I assume you should be able to control it. If your modem supports network interface, you can use it instead of RAS. Last time I tried it in XP, it had different automatic assignment.

Thanks for the input.

I have setup a dyndns account for the server and ping that dns name to get my "Public" IP. I then use that IP and the specified port in VNC to connect. ADSL works great, but with the 3G it says it cant establish a connection.

Firewall on the server has been switched off, for the purpose of testing to try and get a connection, but still nothing. I used to use my Vodacom sim card in a 3G modem and was able to connect with that too if i remember correctly. Will try that again to be sure though.

According to our technical support manager, a lot of the new USB dongles install themselves as a wifi point, whereas the VPN client is looking for a dial-up connection. The solution is to create a dial-up connection for the USB dongle.

The VPN client normally views ADSL as a LAN connection, so no problem.

Probably best to speak to your VPN support.

Thanks for the suggestion
I am using the Vodafone K3565 Rev2 modem, and believe it has installed as a dial up and not a wifi connection...

Ping -t the vpn server and post the results plx

Not too high overall, few lost packets, doesn't seem like a network traffic issue

What other services are being port forwarded? 2 things:
I want you to try set up a port forward from a port like 21/22/25/80/143/443 that isn't in use,and change the VNC port on the server to match
Also, the exact opposite,if you have a service like smtp/mail etc running, set a forward from the VNC port to that service, then telnet in to your "VNC" port and see if you get any response

It could be the same problem i had to remote desktop a office PC.
Which dashboard are you using to connect to internet?
If it is 8ta, make sure you set connection type to RAS. Changing the connection type fixed my problem

Haven't ever really done Telnetting :(

Not sure if your modem supports network interface. If doesn't there will be no such option. You can see in your Windows connections (start -> connect to - show all connections) if your dialup connection is created and which one is active when you are connecting. Then press second mouse button on it and chose "Properties". You will see whether is using modem or network adapter. This is also the place you can check firewall setting on your connection.

Will take a look! Thanks for the suggestion!

Just a question on the side... Is there a way that i can check my monthly data usage on my 10Gb 3G bundle? The modem is switched between various PC's, so the data counters are incorrect and i would like to see what the total usage of my bundle is.
