How is Cybersmart 500Mbps uncapped?

Hey.

I’m moving into an apartment building and need to get good reliable internet for my job. I noticed there is already a Cybersmart Lightspeed fibre box installed in the apartment. Haven’t really looked at them before now, I see they offer 500Mbps for R899. How are they able to provide that when most other providers are charging around a grand for 100Mbps?

Is it really 500Mbps or some sort of sales talk (and if not 500Mbps, is the actual speed still competitive with other product offerings in this price bracket)? And how is the provided router (do I have the option to use my own?)

Normally I would go with Afrihost openserve 100Mbps, not sure if it’s worth getting that hooked up instead. Actually this is my first time moving into an apartment complex, do I even have a choice or do I have to use the already installed provider?

I *think* some of the reasons that they can do this is because they're closed access, they only build to apartment blocks and they recoup their costs a bit quicker with their installation fees.
I feel like @cavedog would be able to give you more insight as he knows vastly more than i do.

Going by a friend's past experience, it's supposed to be a symmetrical 500mbps service but he got around 500mbps down and anywhere from 100-200mbps up for some reason.

If your apartment complex only has cybersmart's lightspeed fibre then you've got no other choice but to use them as an ISP but if your apartment complex has other FNOs like openserve etc then you're free to choose any ISP of your choice

It's not actually 500 Mbps like you're used to at other FNOs

Cybersmart recently announced an upgrade to its Lightspeed uncapped fibre service, offering speeds of up to 500Mbps for R899 per month.

By default, the service is configured as a 250Mbps symmetrical service – 250Mbps download and 250Mbps upload – but this may be adjusted.

Examples of available configurations include 450Mbps/50Mbps, and 500Mbps/10Mbps.

Still really well priced.
