How is it possible to have data usage when my internet was down for 3 weeks?

I have a question I am hoping someone can answer. I am totally baffled by this and I don't think I will get any help from Telkom.

On the 28th of May this year my internet went down. It finally was "fixed" around the 17th or 18th of June or thereabout. Today I was looking at the data usage over the last few months as I do not know how on earth I could have used 179 gig of data this month. (I have a 4mb Uncapped package). My usage bar shows I am in the orange.

But the thing is - - for the three weeks I was down - it shows that I must have used over 50 gig of internet data. There are ip addresses there that are not mine. The usage normally starts around 6:30pm. One time there was over 10 gig downloaded in one day and I know we never had access. So how is this even possible

The Bolded part is when I never had internet access, and was fighting with Telkom to get it put back on.

The internet lasted 2 weeks and was gone for 15 days again and when I look at those stats it says that there was no usage during the 15 days which is what the stats should have shown for the above.

How is this possible and is it also possible that my wifi is being used by someone who is perhaps "hacking" into it for want of a better word.

Thanks

Keltria.

I have never given the username and password to anyone - I don't even know my neighbours names. Never spoken to them. The other laptops that use this connection are all controlled. We tell each other what is being done. There is no streaming and the xbox is not used that often. The xbox only arrived here beginning of August anyway.

I still do not understand who used the internet when I could not.

If people want to hack my internet - they are going to do it no matter what I do - but Don't abuse it and get me throttled.

I have changed the name and password, but when I went onto the Telkom section to change it - I had to actually turn the wifi off, because it said that there is already a user using this. Once I turned the wifi off and connected with the cord I could change everything. I have downloaded nothing in the last two days - yet I have used over 2 gig. It's actually not funny anymore.

Call the Telkom Fraud line (0800 124 000) and ask them to investigate all telephone numbers linked to the usage on your ADSL account as you suspect that somebody is using your account without your permission.

Provide them with your ADSL account, eg. : online123456 and your ADSL phone number.

Firstly how do you know your internet was down? I know it sounds like a silly question but how would you have verified it?

You also state there are IP addresses that aren't yours. IP addresses where? How do you know they weren't yours?

It is quite likely that your Wifi is compromised or your account is compromised, or your internet was never broken but instead something was using it so much that you thought it was...thus the questions.

Every time I tried to connect it said "No Internet Access" It also had that Triangle thing with ! in it.

This is one of the IP's I found on the site where I can read what data I have used..

Fri Jun 5 18:23:43 2015 Fri Jun 5 18:57:31 2015 2028 IP removed405 822 800

The one I normally find for myself is IP removed. That Ip is almost constant and does not vary much.

Telkom told me when they finally fixed the issue that there was an issue with the Dslam or something. But someone was using the internet.

I did log a call with them today - but I really don't think they will do much. If it takes them 3 weeks to fix a fault, its going to take forever to get an answer. I am just baffled about this.

Well the "No Internet Access" could simply be a local problem, not necessarily that the internet was gone. Was it broken on all other devices too?

In South Africa ISP's assign dynamic IP's. Every time your router reboots or reconnects you get a new IP. That other IP is in the same range and very likely was assigned to your account.

The best bet would be to request what DSL Numbers accessed your accounts. If it's only your number then it means nobody compromised your ISP account.

Is your Wireless custom setup? Or are you using it out of the box? Using WPS (push button) or a code?

Logged a call? With 0800 124 000 ? That's the Ernst & Young call centre not Telkom.

It never worked on anything - not the phones - nothing - it was gone.

Um - I set this modem up - so - forgive me when I say I don't have a cooking clue as to the set up - I followed instructions and it was set up. Sorry. :o

Been there and it doesn't help. I have a 20gig cap a month and noticed it disappearing faster and faster. When it disappeared after a week. I got hold of Telscum and got the user name and password changed. Rolled over into August and my 20gig cap lasted 2 days. As I don't use much internet at home I found this impossible. My ADSL line is so laughably slow I could never get through 20gigs in 2 days. Must be my dog. It could be said the consultant I was trying to explain how impossible the scenario is. Come September when my ADSL contract is up with them they can f**k off.

Some ISPs can lock your account to the Adsl port/line, and then only one session is allowed. Even if the other party have your credentials, they can't log in...

It sounds more like the attacker is using the WiFi and is denying of Internet access.
