How is it possible to have data usage when my internet was down for 3 weeks?

All I can say is...... your wifi has been hacked and might still be.

This has happened to me before, so I know the symptoms you are describing.

Right, so you have changed the router user/pass, that's a good start. Hopefully you also changed the wifi password and SSID ?

I see you also mentioned making your wifi "invisible", which is great, hiding it from everyone. It will however still broadcast itself as "unknown", so the hacker might just use your old SSID if you haven't changed it.......so please do change it if you haven't already.

Now the most important step after doing all this, is to setup an ACCESS LIST in your router, that will only allow your specific devices to connect to your WIFI via their specific mac addresses. It's not that difficult, at least it wasn't on my telkom netgear something or other router.

All the best and good luck!

PS... you internet in all likelihood was never down as the hacker created his own ACCESS LIST denying all your devices access, which explains the network icon with ! in it.

Lock your account to your number and turn off your WiFi

Telkom does this by default to all uncapped accounts. Its not possible for someone else to have used his line.

Someone gained access to his network; or perhaps it was a device on his own network....

Thank you everyone for your help.

Something is still amiss.

So yes someone still has access.

I will try and sort this out tonight - I was car jacked today and have had a long day at the police station. Lucky they never took my car - just my Blackberry Passport and laptop and some cash. But having a gun to your head is no joke. Its the second time now.

Will keep you updated.

Eish ok, sorry to hear :(

Please do keep us posted, I'm confident we can get this sorted out.

You sure something isn't trying to update? Windows 10 maybe? The being exactly 04:00 seems very suspicious and scheduled.

WiFI hacking is one thing, but maintaing a connection is a whole different story.

Not updating Windows 10 - I don't have Windows 10 on my system - only Windows 8. (Well I didn't have Windows 10 - that computer is now gone). With Windows 8, I stopped any updating, because I was finding that every time it updated, and tried to actually install the update, it would often fail. So I asked it to prompt for any updates and I could choose if I wanted to install/update them. I only have Windows 7 at the moment on the older computer.

All computers in the house are switched off, and disconnected from the internet before bedtime, that is why I know that these downloads are not mine. There are no phones that can update themselves with gigabytes of data on a daily basis, the x box is not doing it, so I am slightly confused as to where the space is actually going.

The grandkids tablets are also not to blame as they are not allowed onto the internet without supervision, as they are still pretty young. Anything that gets downloaded for them is pretty small as its purely for educational purposes. My son is working nightshift on a perma basis, so there is no online gaming. He works and sleeps Monday to Sunday morning. The only day he currently has off is Sunday and then on a Monday night he goes back to work.

Before this all started going on I was using maybe 60 to 80 gig a month. Sometimes more, sometimes less - it depended on the amount of time I had.

So I really think someone is freeloading off me. Like I said, it's ok if you want to freeload, but be decent about it. Don't kick me off my own internet, and don't use all my space.

Another thing that I noticed lately is that the power the bar that tell me how strong the signal is, or something like that. (It looks like steps at the bottom of the screen.) It is always missing the top bar lately. So you always have the highest bar blank so only four are white.

Once again thanks for the help.

Thankyou - now I have to deal with insurance. Yesterday's stealing of my wifi was not as bad - at least it was under a gig for a change. I was not online most of the day or night as I had other things to deal with. I have decided that I am going to disable the wifi for a few days and use the cord to the adsl only and see if it has any effect. If that is at all possible. I am thinking that whoever is hacking me will be able to turn the wifi on?

Maybe change your router password
