I haven't seen any overclocking results for the Striker Extreme mobo - don't want to buy the RAM & find out the mobo doesn't overclock lekka.

*Hang on, doesn't look like the Striker Extreme can go more than DDR2 800....

A word of caution, since you mentioned Vista...

The GeForce 8800 line doesn't currently have any Vista drivers, beta or otherwise. NVIDIA has engaged in extremely deceptive advertising saying the cards are "ready for Vista today", but if you look closely you'll find a disclaimer (added last week, after the cards had been on sale for over a month) that says the drivers will be available for download in late January.

Check here:

http://www.digg.com/hardware/No_Vista_drivers_for_NVIDIA_8800_series_cards

and here:

...for discussions about this.

Don't spend $600+ on a standard VGA adapter, like I did.

I can get you this for R17000........

Couple of things.
Yes there isn't a VIsta driver for 8800 and that's because Vista isn't out yet. Not much point in releasing a driver for an OS that hasn't released yet. Yes RTM is out, but that's exactly that RTM, and not retail and as no OEMs provide a GF8 powered Vista machine there's no need for a driver.
Reason driver is coming in Jan is because OS is only releasing in Jan.
Also 8800GTS is not $600 but $449 :)

As for Striker Extreme I have the board with me, it's okay, will get you to 440MHz or so, handles low temps very well (at least upto -80'C or so) and is pretty stable, however for the price you could do better. The Abit IN9-MAX is coming next month along with the DFI board and those promise to be legendary like the DFI NF4 SLI-DR and the Abit IC7-Max and NF7-S.

Core2Quad? Well unless you encode allot and run 3DM06 only then it's rather pointless. They run hot, overclock like potatoes and aren't really worht eh money if you're only into gaming as an X6800 will beat out the Quad Core in game performance.

Power Supply? Rather the Enermax Galaxy 850Watt, or one of the other brands. Wouldn't trust cooler master so much.

Memory get the G.Skill PC6400 F2 4-4-4-12 from Prophecy excellent ram that. Rather go GTX if the rest of the rig is like that. Going GTS will be a little of a let down ;/
And I say that running 2x8800GTS cards in one machine and 1x8800GTX in another.

The rest is perfect.
BTW Rendiers' price is damn good :)

wow!

could you maybe give us a per component break down of the price?

sorry for being so skeptical and all, just can't help it :o

wrt vista, that's exactly why it's only launching 31 Jan, so hardware manufacturers have time to get drivers ready, otherwise it would have shipped commercially by now.

Thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated!

Unfortuntely I only buy Asus motherboards, it's a tradition that I've started back in 1998 and I think most of the pcs I've put it in, are still running today + Asus Mobos are most of the time the fastest money can buy. :)

Agree with you on your CPU choice, my biggest concern there is price, but otherwise a 6800 would be sweet. :)

I differ from you wrt the power supply, I think CoolerMaster makes excellent power supplies - in fact, I've been running the 450W RealPower PSU in my rig and it's rock-solid. Also have a look at that link that I posted for it, the specs of that power supply is pretty impressive and the reviews & awards just as good.

RAM is the same as my choice for Asus motherboards - I refuse to buy anything else than Corsair. I think Corsair has proven themselves time & time again for fast & reliable RAM - just have a look at Anandtech, Tom's Hardware and many other hardware sites. But that is my personal choice....

Why only 2GB RAM? Windows Vista is going to use 1GB on its own, meaning you'll have only 1GB left to run programs.

that's exaggerating a bit, vista runs just fine with only 1GB of ram, and there's still a whole lot free. 2GB will definitely be enough for now.

make sure the sound card is compatible with windows vista! and 2Gb is not good for Vista. I upgraded to 3GB this morning. Windows Vista on startup uses about 500Mb then dont forget all your other proggies.
