....we get throttled by ISPs, nailed by ICASA and the Communications regulator and banned by SONY,SAMA and all those other dudes who want to kill the internet fraternity in ZA?

Now that uncapped is introduced, these dude are going to become like vultures(like tow-truck drivers) just waiting for someone to make a mistake, ready to swoop in and go evil on your ass!

This is carte blanche for the oppotunists who have been waiting to lock in and arrest those who are seemingly "abusing" the internet using p2p, torrents, newsgroups, etc...

The irony of in this is that the the very ISP that will report you to the authorities will the be one hosting the "shares" on their news servers...who is going to report them? Go figure!

Also ISPs are doing an OVERSELL ratio which started back in the day of when diginet lines were introduced and the ratio was in the region of 16:1 per E1(2MB) so they will gladly take your money, let you download all you ca eat but.....BUT....they don't tell you that they will "throttle" you after a sieable amount of Gigs have been downloaded and that they ARE monitoring your connection(traffic type, ports, IP addresses, etc.)

....so....how long before we are nailed, screwed and bolted? How long before the ISPs realise that our network in ZA land cannot manage the sudden influx of connections and demand for MORE!

Yes, Seacom is there ....BUT we are still reliant to some extent on Telkom, T1,T2 and T3 ISPs to get those nice fast connections to our businesses and homes so....how long?

Call me paranoid, anal or pessimistic but such is the reality of Internet in ZA...this too shall pass...

To a certain extent I think you are over paranoid but then again this is the land of equal and "un"fair opportunity.

All these sudden uncapped accounts albeit selled by what ever ISP still needs to run over the Telkom copper. End of the line Telkom is still making money and each new line installed and adsl subscription paid still give Telkom their share of the pie in the sky.

I do also think what ever cheap uncapped option is used, the contention ratio would not be low and those that take uncapped and won't use half of the "allowable" fair usage will pay for the gigs the download hungry will use. I don't think news servers will be monitored as closely as torrents would be monitored.

Yup - We all have the same concerns but are hoping that pressure and time will win out.
There is definitely a driving force in this country that is making connectivity better, even though the regulation is generally counter-productive.

I've found that 'pessimism' is the standard South African default, with good reason... however, 'apathy' seems to run with that.

We all need to demand transparency, clarity and better and better solutions, not just on these boards!
Finger's crossed...
