I was dreading these horror stories, nooooooooo, don't tell me things like this, I was hoping to hear wonderful stories like :

"Yes, my ADSL service took 3 days to install, Telkom were so brilliantly fast when it came to installing it for me. They gave me a thumbs up a smile and an extra 10GB cap for being a good customer ! I love Telkom !"

Suddenly my life has turned from full colour to only black and white...oh ADSL...were art thou...
ROFLOL.. Man what ever you smoking.. please pass some around :)

I got my ADSL installed in 3 days. But I phoned 2 months before and told them I was moving into my new house on X date and they had to install it by that date. When I moved in 2 months later. It had not been done after I was promised countless times and even told they where on their way 1 week before I moved. Luckily like everyone here has mentioned. I took down names. So when I never had ADSL when I moved in. I phoned, asked to speak to the supervisor and would not give up until I got hold of him. Gave all the names and dates and asked for it to be fixed ASAP... I was lucky yeah but it was done ... 3 days later

Telkom ADSL installation

Mine took 8 days in cape town :) one word of advise, hunt down the regional manager of sales in your area and phone constantly.

Happy story: 1 week from confirmation.
Why be so generous to Telkom as to measure from date of their so-called "confirmation"? I have colleagues in Europe and elsewhere who had their ADSL installed literally one day after placing the order. Let's not expect/allow lower standards for SA.

I waited one month. I phoned them every single day, eventually when they made the appointment they told me that I was getting a "priority install", because they "knew my application was urgent"! WTF - if one month is an "urgent priority installation" (on an exchange that was ready), I'd hate to get their normal treatment. And this was only last month, so it seems they're getting worse. Perhaps because as the installation technician told me they're 'busy laying off more people'.

Got told today that my installation will be on the 14th of this month (I applied last month on err the 13th, I think)
I did take a lot of calls, bouncing around through different departments, me cheerfully asking for updates on the progress and quoting my reference number.
Maybe there's something in the computer system that says 'when customer has called more than 20 times, make contact and set an install date to shut them up'..
We'll see if it actually happens on the 14th..

I never phoned them once.

Applied online, they phoned me twice to confirm. Three weeks later the techie phoned to say he was at my door. As luck would have it, I was out of town. He said he'd do what he could at the box, then come back the next day (nice bloke actually). That night I plugged in my router and was up and running in 30 seconds flat.

The only hassle was the fact that he still had to come and test my line. I told him to just bring whatever papers I had to sign to the office and I'd sign them, but aparrently it doesn't work that way. So I had to take an hour off a really busy day (tip: make sure everybody's cellphones are off, they screw up the line tests), and got a R400,00 speed fine for the effort :(

First time I had ADSL: Applied on 20th November 2004. Had it installed on the 27th November.

Second and current time having ADSL: Ordered 11th May. Was installed on the 8th June.

I live in Benoni on a farm :P . Dunno if that makes for good/dodgey service but apparently ADSL is huge in the area :P. Must be because of the need for bandwidth when d/l milk processing orders :D.

My only wait was while they upgraded the local exchange - one day I'm looking at the Telkom page where its showing availability mid-2006 the next day its saying Sept 2004. I was the first one in the area to get installed and even then the techie came a day early to see if I would mind if he just went and sorted it then and there - I guess he was just in the neighborhood.

No horror story on that end - just the monthly bu-fu'ing when the bill arrives.

Well, it's been 6 days now and still no phone call from my ADSL Technician. I keep my cell next to me when I sleep, I stare at it constantly...waiting for that phone call...sometimes I swear I hear things...how much more torture must Telkom put me through !?

All it takes is that precious call to say "Hi, we are coming to install your ADSL this afternoon..."

The torture...

My first experience - Applied online waited 2 weeks being a good trusting citizen of the proudly South African Brand phoned Spermcount "aaahh yes sir sooorrreeee no application received" "gmph" "ok well then fax me the friggin froms so I can do this" faxed through a written application and called for confirmation - "ahhh yes sir application have been received" "thank you now you will contact me with installation details" "aaahhh yess sir" - Being the good trusting citizen I am wait another 2 weeks - they say patience is a virtue then I must be virtuosity :) called again "eeehhh yess sir application now at technical centre they check to test line" "what do u mean its been 2 weeks already and they r still testing the line while I can check on the internet via YOUR website that ADSL has been rolled out and the exchange is able to carry ADSL !!" "ehhhh yes sir but technical must test line first before sending of for installation"
Ok then so I got reference number and all details I needed to have line installed - 3 weeks later still nothing so I started hunting down techies and "supervisors" which is never availible in any way, I finally got hold of the area supervisor and crap on him till he agreed to come do the installation himself haha got line installed and ADSL up and running after 2 and a half months !!!!!

Experience nr. 2 - This one was fairly easy by surprise except for having the old line cancelled which is still a nightmare as Spermcount charged me for two months of usage after I have faxed through the cancellation notification. Anyway I did a written application and got a reference nr. the next day after which I started phoning up the techies and area managers and by surprise the techie pitched up at my place before Spermcounts installation date - he said he decided he might aswell do my installation while in the area ! cuddos to Telkoms Technicians these guys are really trying their best to get things going its the friggin Teklom management and beurocracy and capitalistic bastards at the top and also a few managers that might lose golfing time on tuesday if they try to help some poor bloke which crashes their whole face value and make them the most hated company in South Africa - Proudly South African my arse - but still I will be patient except while talking to a Teklom Helpdesk monkey I tell them I don't even want to talk to them I WANT A MANAGER !!!!!

Well, it's been 3 weeks already, so I decided to give old Telkom a call and see what was taking so long for a techie to come and install my ADSL. I got through, spoke to the guy and he said that he would put me through to some other bloke. Had to wait for 10 minutes (whilst listening to annoying, repetitive music and some old hag telling me to have my order number ready), finally I got through, I explained to him my situation, then he went away and I heard him babbling on about the constitution and some other stuff that I couldn't make out (dunno who he was talking to !?). He then took all my contact details (AGAIN !) and said he's sending it off now to the "approval / confirmation" department or something like that...

Now what I want to know is that why wasn't this done already, why did I have to phone to get it "approved" ? I've been waiting 3 weeks...What must I do now ? Wait even more ? I would love to know what is going on with my order...

1st time. 11 Days.
2nd time. 8 Days.

This didnt come cheap though, lots and lots and lots of bitching and moaning at telkom. And whne I say lots I mean lots :)

I get the impression that it varies from Area to Area.
I live in Kensington.
Apparently we have one of the most populated DSLAM's in Johannesburg.
The guys here are smart.. and fast.

I placed my order the day before going on my Christmas Holiday, 3 days in to my holiday they phoned me to let me know everything was done and tested.
I got home from Holiday about a week later, plug my ADSL modem in, and it worked... no hassles.

When there's a line fault, I get a phonecall from Willem (I think he's the local exchange ADSL guy) within 30 minutes of me reporting the fault, and we normally get the problem solved during the call.

IIRC - about 2 weeks. Ordered early - mid Dec 2002, was given an installation date sometime mid Jan 2003, had a surprise call late Dec 2002 - they wanted to come and install. Probably fairly unique around here - getting my installation earlier than scheduled as well as being early in the life of local ADSL.
Looks like if you want fast ADSL installation, order over Christmas.

Applied for DSL384 22 June, called today to follow up and was given an installation date of 4 Aug. This is in Camps Bay.
Seems the backlog is getting bigger and bigger by the day.
BTW the Telkom employee i spoke to confirmed the massive backlog.

When i asked why does it take so long, the guy just said "this is Telkom", now you have got to love that comment.
