How long does it take to activate a SIM

I just got back to the office after buying a Cell C SIM which I need for testing purposes. I did the whole RICA nonsense, I inserted the SIM into my phone about 5 minutes ago, but it just displays an 'x' where the signal strength should be.

I'm in the middle of Bellville so I'm 100% sure there's coverage.

MTN very quick, like immediately. Vodacom still come with the crap of 2-24 hours, but not immediately

Thanks, @CellC, care to jump in here? I need this sim active today still, I need to test an Android app and its behaviour on the CellC network.

Arrrgh, never mind. I called CellC from the office line and this sim isn't RICA'd. This makes me wonder what the lady was doing who served me when she asked for my proof of address and ID book.

Update: went back to the store.

The lady says she misunderstood me and chose "sim swop" instead of new sim and as far as I understand you don't need to RICA when you do a sim swop, which is why their system said its not RICA'd. Lesson learned
