How long does your router take to authenticate?

Most of the time my Netgear takes between 5 and 15min to connect. Once connected uptime is 100%. But I dread changing accounts because it can take forever for the reconnection to happen.

On router reboots, syncing is very quick.

My Billion 810 took a while. I reckon between 5-8 minutes from off to connected.
Current TP Link is quick. About 2-3 minutes from off to connected.

Just changed over from TelkomInternet account to Afrihost account. 20min!!! I did it remotely and I thought I might've typo'ed the user/pass

FINALLY it came up. I cannot understand why it takes so long

odd stuff, I use Telkom, WA, Axxess and all can be up and running after router reboot in 2 minutes.

Maybe those accounts with only a single login (uncapped) have to wait for old session to be "expired/closed" properly.

Running off a Netgear via Mweb - between 1 and 15 minutes after it's up and running after a reboot.

My netgear takes about 2-3min from powered down to online

I experienced a similar issue with a linksys / cisco router took like 10mins to connect - I actually thought the router was faulty. I then got a TP-LINK, its a million times better and to connect now is under 2 mins - to the same ISP and account - MWEB

I have switched between my TelkomInternet and Afrihost account several times since I started the thread. best reconnect was 2 minutes... worst was 20 minutes. Completely random issue this.....

This seems to be isolated mostly to Netgear routers, my DGND3700v2 used to connect within a minute or two once synced, now it takes anything from a couple of minutes to 10 minutes.

I suspect Telkom might have changed something on their side that the Netgear routers don't like very much.

grim - You might be onto something. The TP-LINK which I used before the current netgear connected in less than a minute but sadly refused to sync any faster than 4mg on my 8meg line

My old Netgear took ages to authenticate. I now have a TP-Link and I can change between accounts in about 30 secs :)

Hi There,
My Netgear was about 2 minutes from startup to connect. TP-Link about a minute. Never had connection times as long as others have indicated. Did you try another router immediately after the Netgear to get a comparison and eliminate the router?

Regards

Tim

In general the TP-Links authenticate a tad faster than some other routers, there are many factors at play from start-up to syncing & auth. Different devices uses different measures - some sync faster but auth. slower and others differently, some use the 3-pass step, others the 4-5pass and some even a 7pass from power down to a full Auth. Factors like the Memory, Boot-loaders, Encryption methods, MIPS etc. comes into play - so it's really device depending.

The best way probably is to power-down - disconnect all client devices, incl wireless from the router and perform a start-up & sync to get some idea.

Most higher-end routers takes a bit longer due to system checks as mentioned before initialising syncing & authenticating. Your DSL-Line-state, Exchange connected to, ISP also determine the time frame.

So, as long a the bloody thing connects you're fine :)

I got a netgear, if I enter new ADSL Details it restarts (takes about 2 minutes).
