i guess it depends where in sa u r using it, if u sing it in jhb the usually trap on bridges etc, so they dont run onto the road to stop you

Its actually crap... cause as far as I know it is illegal for the cops to hide the camera's, etc.... but if they do nothing happens.... but if you do something to avoid those camera's...you get nailed.

I'm sure the chances of getting caught are slim and many people use them on the road...but is this really an area where one wants to be on the bleeding edge?dhez said:

I've heard that the best way to approach this is to get a laser *detector* (legal) and then nail the brakes when the detector trips. Supposedly this is enough to confuse the handheld speedtraps....but it's all unconfirmed and nailing the brakes regularly is probably not such a good idea.

dont use a lazer/radar jammer, you will get caught...eventually. rather get a lazer/radar detector. this way you will have sufficient time to brake, before the cop takes a second reading on your speed. (he needs two radar readings, with no less than 10km/h difference on the readings, something like this)
also its best to get a detector with sensors on both front and the back of your car. (the cheapies are only at the front)

I tried a Lasre Detector (Cobra one) cost me quite a bit....
Guess what, didnt work... Only beeped for traffic lights, so if you ever wonder when traffic lights are coming up, get yourself one of these
EDit: xrapidx had that exact one..didnt work for me ...just didnt detect like its supposed to.. tried it in a 4X4 dunno if that makes a diff but it shouldnt

They are supposed to get 2. Basically to cancel out any possible errors, and to show that your speed is "constant"
they usually aim, take one reading, save, reset, aim again, take second reading.

I use a laser detector with Veil stealth coating. It doesn't jam the signal, but it requires them to take a second reading, by which time the detector would have already warned me when they tried zapping me the first time.
They claim that the coating gives you up to 10 seconds of additional reaction time, giving you enough time to slow down. I'm not sure of that claim because I've never needed more than 5.
And this isn't defeating the ends of justice because you're not interfering with their equipment. They usually get a reading on their 2nd attempt anyway.

How much did that set you back?
Hmm reminds me of that spray for ur plated which supposedly returns the flash back on fixed speed cameras , which i also might add DOES NOT WORK
Oh and which laser detector in particular do you use?

The detector is a Cobra XRS 9730 which was around R1500 if I recall correctly, and the Veil coating was about R500 for a can.
That spray for the plates doesn't work for laser-based cameras, only for cameras with a visible flash.
