How many people still use Windows XP

Been running 64bit 10 at work and home for over a year now. Not one single program or device compatibility issue. And at the office we've changed printers numerous times in that period.

Because the most basic tasks were taking ages to complete. But to be fair, that was more a hardware issue than a software one.

The company was mostly running old Celerons, Pentiums and Core2Duos with at most 2 gigs of RAM if they were lucky (some even had 512mb). They also had never been maintained so were chock full of dust (especially the POS machines), and were falling apart. It was costing us more in lost sales, productivity and IT man hours with them falling over all the time than it was worth it.

We upgraded all our hardware, Head Office we got refurbished Dell Optiplexes with win 7 which I then upgraded for free to Win 10 and POS machines with brand new HP machines which came with a win 10 licence.

So it was more a hardware upgrade that necessitated an OS upgrade.
 
I can only report what I have been told. All their PCs in the shop are still on Windows XP, and the reason is that their IT support company won't upgrade, and they won't because of compatibility issues with the printers scanners etc that they lease to small print shop businesses.

Had it before with HP Laserjet P2055d (USB only). Standard PCL driver is not able to switch printer to 1200dpi and MAC client can not print. Standard Postscript driver do not work at all. Tried UPD, but spent couple hours to recover. It messed up with Windows so much, I had to do clean install when 1607 came out.

I wish it had LAN interface. There is no other solution for this printer (and other 'professional' series), will have to try again. In which mode did you install UPD and what 'hops' you are refer to? I reckon, Dynamic mode is required for printing from MAC laptop.

I can understand it being different from company to company. But you wanted to know why companies don't upgrade in general. That answer is: If it aint broke, don't fix it :p
 
M$ wants people to upgrade to WIN10 - not going to happen without drivers for so called legacy devices - it is not going to happen - end of story.

Not just drivers...

Have machines that run on software that is not compatible with windows 10

Well said! Not even HP printers and devices work properly with the so called "universal drivers". When trying to fix the problem by downloading drivers from HP themselves the outcome is always the same. The install process fails and if you them manually install the drivers, WIN 10 will of it own accord overwrite and replace the HP driver with its driver, which does not work. You end up being only able to "print" via wi-fi, or via USB and cannot set the printer in question up as a LAN printer. Who is playing games here? MS or the printer suppliers or both?

There was an article I read recently which detailed how all of the UK's warships (except the new carriers) are running a combo of XP & 2000.

My short stint in IT has lead me to despise printers. They just never work as they are supposed to and the software it comes with can often best be described as bloat.
 
For printers you can run a virtualized instance of either Windows XP or 2003 completely isolated from the net as a print server, its a PIA to setup but works.

Scanners becomes a bit more troublesome you can either set them up to scan over FTP/SMB or Scan to email.

guess they don't want forced upgrades during action.

There are three major Open source browsers still functional in XP, I wouldn't recommend it as a daily system but more as a curiosity, or something to play with:

http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/ - Highly recomended by the retro community, even tho its pretty old by now.
