Hi guys

Was just wondering, how many customers share a telkom DSLAM? ie how many of us are condending for the same bandwidth? and what is the bandwidth allocation per DSLAM?

IIRC there are 31 users sharing. Have no info about the bandwith.

Telkom is under no legal obligation to publish it's contention ratios, so for now it's anyone's guess.

I dont know what Telkom provisions, but the international practice is usually 16-20 contention ratio. So let's say worse case 20:1. This means if a DSLAM has 600 512k DSL users connected, then (600x512k)/20 is provisioned for backhaul. i.e. 15.36 Mbps.

Actually, they are.
Download the ICASA ADSL regulations from : http://www.mydrive.co.za/download.php?file=70

Edit:
Okay, they're not specifically obliged to mention the contention ratio's.
But, under point 8, the Service Level Agreements point:
(v) guaranteed minimum downstream data rate for local loop length of a given distance.

The inclusion of local loop in that clause can only refer to everything excluding the international links.
i.e. Telkom are supposed to guarantee your local loop throughput.

The words "length of a given distance", of course, simply adds utter confusion to the point and is one of the many reasons that these "regulations" are not worth the time spent on making them.

mmm, local loop is up until the dslam port in my opinion. It says nothing about backhaul. So effectively, this is a guaranteed minimum sync rate and nothing more.

100% correct.

hmmm so how does telkom share international capacity with each user at the DSLAM? is it by their NAS port? or actual pppoe IP from the ISP?

Just wondering if I would get better throughput if I dialled my international account 4x and load balanced between them...would it help?

How are you going to logon to your account 4x ? If it was possible we would all be sharing user accounts.

Why don't you try that and let us know if it works ;)

If the backhaul is congested, I don't think it will make much difference.

No multiple ppoe connections won't make a diffirence if that is what you are trying to say cause you just use what the line give. Not more. The line controls the speed not the accoount.

If I understand you wrong. Sorry!

Yes I mean dial 4x pppoe connections. However, if I download a local file I get 3.6mbps but if I download an international file I get <1mbps

So im thinking that the line has no effect on your international thoughput because it only limits "max speed". If we do not reach "max limit" then it is irrelevant on your line speed.

Telkom obviously contends us for international content ( if you download the same file at 3am compared to 3pm you will see) but I want to know how they contend us.....IP or per line or how?

I don't think they limit. I think its just major traffic that cause this massive internet trafficjam. You got to love telkom for that! :p
