Hi guys,

I have installed Windows 7 x64 RC7100 a couple of weeks ago to test and play around.

My question is, after a clean install, how much Ram will Windows 7 load/use in idle on average? Does +- 700mb sound right? If yes, how come people say its lighter then Windows XP or Vista?

Is it just my PC that uses abt 700mb-800mb on idle when no additional software is loaded or installed?

Thanks

I've installed this on my friend's pc with 512 MB ram and it uses 280MB after login and idle

Edit: but on my 4GB machine it uses 1.2GB

No windows 7 is pretty heavy on ram depending on how you have, people don't say it uses as much as xp they say it is faster than xp.

On my clean install it was using 17% or 5GB.. do the math

Yup windows 7 flies man, you must see photoshop and corel draw open.

3 times faster than xp with the same hardware.

Keep in mind that memory used probably includes cached memory.

7 is not faster than XP, you need new hardware to take advantage of the optimizations.

An old PC with 7 will suck, I know I've tried it, 7 on a new PC is the best option, it will be faster because new hardware has great optimizations.

I have an old PC and windows 7 is faster.

Windows 7 RC7100 64-bit
8GB RAM installed (4x 2GB Kingston Hyper-X DDR2 800 Matched)
1.58GB RAM used on idle
0% CPU time
No Page File - set to zero
Motherboard: Asus M3A79-T Deluxe
CPU: AMD Phenom 9950 X4
System is very quick

I have reinstalled it on one of my office computers.

Installation time from boot up to desktop. 29min
On desktop in idle. 719MB

Machine has 4gb ram allocated to it.

The 64-bit version uses about 25% idle on a PC with 4GB of RAM installed, compared to Vista which used about 40%. :p

I have Vista Ultimate 64 with 8 GB @ 1,40 GB atm so that is 17% incl. catched stuff.

7 runs on around ~ 1 Gig

A Freind of mine was able to kick it down to around 600 Megs with 12 GB of Ram.
