R1000 for a towel.
R85 a liter of diesel.

Shame on you Mr Mbeki.

Thats why everyone is flocking to SA to buy their N95's and go back :)

What do you think those 2000 Illegal immigrants shipped off last week came for ;) and why we had such a huge N95 shortage :D

I say open up our borders and let all the Zimbabweans, Mozambicans, Angolans, namibians, Congolese, Nigerians, etc in

They need goods, we have goods, we can make money off them, plus if Home Affairs is not so busy catching illegals ( or selling ID documents to illegals ) they can sort out the ID and passport backlogs

Are you completely mental?..

Doing that will destabilise this country so quickly.

Ah yes, great thinking. I am sure all those illegal immigrants are just coming here to buy our goods. Remind me again what percentage of our native population is unemployed?

Sorry my bad, the "Free Movement of Goods and People" protocol was ratified by SADC in 1996, and implementation began in 2000, wonder why it's taking so long to implement though

I'm no economist or labour expert, but the greater demand for goods will mean we will need to generate goods, therefore more factories and more jobs

With no borders in SADC for a start - people would generally live where they can get jobs - so you put industrial areas where there is no real economic activity and suddeny the place becomes active - enough land, enough jobs, enough money to keep the economy moving and everybody is happy

Eh... the last time I was robbed, they needed goods, I had goods, but I don't remember making any money :D

Having said that, I would never begrudge offering refugee status to anyone from those places. As far as "taking our jobs" are concerned, I believe that the best worker should get the job... no AA in favour of the lazy.

The idea that illegals commit crime, or that crime is only committed by illegals is a complete misnomer

Are you implying that blacks in this country are lazy ?

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me your source or your calculations?

That's what I'm wondering too. And is that using the official exchange rate or the black market exchange rate? Seeing as the official one means nothing.

SA is seen as some sort of paradise to the rest of Africa, if large numbers of people come here and can't find jobs what do you really think they're going to do?

Also, open borders are incompatible with the sort of welfare state the ANC's been trying to create to a limited extent. You can't have free healthcare, education, social grants etc. if they're available to the whole world.

Man, you are incredible, are you implying that lazy people are black?

The last time i checked, i was south african and have been for nearly 35 years, "taking our jobs" - I am part of "our".
AA = affirmative action - read it how you like, in this context AA clearly implies favour of a local resident as opposed to a foreign one, irrespective of whether the local person is lazy or not. You, sir, are obsessed with race.

The official one means a lot to the officials who are making a fortune off of currency exchange inside the country.

True but to the rest of the populace it means nothing, from what I've heard most people use US$ now anyway.

Peg the Zim dollar to the US dollar or Euro rather than the Rand. The rand is a volatile currency and isn't prepared to carry the weight of that mess for the length that it will take to fix up Zim again.

I think the ultimate plan though is to incorporate Zim into the Rand Monetary Area. The US dollar or Euro might be too difficult to sell politically as well. As long as its done probably there shouldn't be that much of a weight to carry, plenty of countries in South America have dollarised with no assistance from the US.

My source is a friend of my mom's who returned from Zim yesterday after a 2 week holiday there. My apology's if the post seemed to generalize as to the entire Zim, only a few places have these prices.
But a few places are too many anyway.
