3 bedroom, 2 toilet, 110 sqm, R5500 (up from R4900 aug 2013).

Val de grace, Pretoria. The N4 is within earshot for one of the rooms. The finishing off the apartment is not very nice, but it is a nice complex.

Currently sharing the house with 2 others, also paying, so I'm paying R1833 pm (excluding all else) !
 
R3820 for a well secured house with huge garage, front stoep (can host around 30 people party here no problem, 50 to 100 if I open the lounges and back stoep), back secured stoep, 3 bedrooms, 2 lounges, 1 bathroom, 1 laundry huge kitchen, study with walk in safe and huge garden.
Included in price is water+electricity+refuse+lawn mowed 1 to 4 times a month (depending on the time of year).

granny flat, lovely garden, separate entrance.

about 70m², can put washing machine in main house's laundry.

I think its daylight robbery, but the alternative is to spend hours in traffic every day.

Can't be anywhere near a main city. Such a place in JHB would be double, if not triple that price.

I used to drive close to 60km per day from Bedfordview to Sandton. Even though my new place is smaller and more expensive, I only drive 6km a day (huge petrol saving), plus I have 2 hours extra in a day.

Exactly this. Extra hours that can be spent productively, and less hours out of dangerous traffic.

Cutting down on commuting = huge gain in my opinion.

The average bond on the average house in JHB is north of R10k. Most people here are paying less than that? (And some areas like Melrose, R10k a month won't even pay half the bond). Granted if you're paying close to what the bond would be and you're not likely to move around a lot you'd be better off buying.

Will probably look at buying a 3 bedroom place in the area at the end of this year. Something off plan.

But not everybody is in the situation where they can buy a home.

Problem I had all my life as the issue was never if we could afford the bond, it's that the banks that had the issue.


That said my neighbour rents out her garage and it pays her bond.
 
R7 900, 3 large bedrooms, 2 bath, single garage. Sonstraal Heights. Inc electricity. One unit was in the market 3 months back for R1,35m which is crazy. Next year when rent goes up will hopefully be my last renting and will then look at buying. Three bed places in the Northern Subs and Durbanville area ain't cheap though.

Most of the places I've looked at, mind you Randburg with 2beds and 2baths, the bond would be on average R7.5k. I do agree that R10k is the norm in some areas but you find some hidden gems.
