Well, I clicked on 1 - 10%, but what's the point of you still have debt.

I do put away a bit, but it feels frivolous when putting away R500, and spending R500 on a credit card. Example values used. My situation is not that dire, but perhaps it conveys my sentiment.

Interesting, I thought comparing those two amounts, your purchasing power would be greater in SA
€2.000 is
- about 3 - 3.5 months of groceries for a two person household not turning pennies
- or one month's rent/mortgage excluding utilities outside of the the big cities
- or 4x car lease payments for a basic hatchback

It's not accurate that €2.000 here gets you more than R38.000 unless SA got dramatically more expensive. You could survive in SA if you net R38k, in NL on €2k you'd be "poor" living salary to salary if you are not homeless (no jokes).

Net salary wise you have more purchasing power though because you earn almost double. And that should tell you everything about cost of living here: earn almost double your SA salary, but save the same amount.

Don't get me wrong though, saving €2k pm is very decent.

100% usually, since my passive income is higher than our general expenditure (we live relatively modestly compared to total income).

We do periodically have some “once-off” purchase (like car, house, renovations, etc), that go beyond this, but hopefully won’t have these for a while after this year. Probably need a new car at some point (7 years now in current).

Big fat zero, some months minus figures.
Didn't you say you had hundreds of gold bars the other day? And you are owner of big wine farm or something? You need to get your stories right ... Or are you not into money like @ShaunSA is not into chicks ?

its not just tax - they deduct medical aid, tax, provident fund plus a few small things like group life and UIF.
So, you get 40 rands in hand if your salary is 100 rands. I suppose if you have debit orders for remaining 40 rands, then you earn 0. Something to think about.
