Upscale sure... their ceiling is pretty high so maybe upscale in terms of the vertical room dimensions?

Seems like everything is upscale, Food, ceilings, staff, service, prices... They better have a bidet in the bathrooms
 
10% is pretty much a norm and optional. I don't appreciate it when its forced and avoid those restaurants. Tipping for coffee and counter orders is just f***** ridiculous as well as this American concept of 30% etc.

They add a 13.5 service charge on top of the bill, so you are coerced to pay that specific amount additionally. They are not refusing the tip, they are enforcing it on you. But, if you can afford to pay R2175 per person for the meal, plus an additional R1795 for the wine pairing (R6145 total for two), you probably can afford the 13.5% ""service fee".

Round up to R50 or R100, which ever is closer, but not less than 10%.
 
It really depends on the service. Usually 10% - 15%.

If the experience has been exceptional, then 20%. If it has been poor then 5% or less (all depends).

If it is a small order like just a juice or coffee for me, then I will often give closer to 20%.

I am not sure, but I think these guys earn a pittance, and so generally 10% is the minimum.

I know that in some restaurants/cafes, they pool their tips and share with kitchen staff, which is probably fair.

Being in the US, I’m used to 20% basic (expected level of service), but will go well above that for good or exceptional service.

What’s awkward is when I travel, it feels really odd to tip less, so I generally don’t, and it can sometimes result in weirdness.
