How much does a server upgrade cost?

I have just started a new job. I am using a Winterm/Citrix device to connect to a server running Windows Server 2003, and work directly off that.

After previously working in Windows 7 I find that that I now want to jump out of the window. The fact that the Administrator has hamstrung access does not help.

What kind of costs would we be looking at to upgrade? Linux is not an option. Most of the employees here act like their computer is going to bite them if they have to do more than access Word or the browser.

Any ideas?

if you are going 2k8 just make sure that the clients are compatible with it before...

All depends on your needs. Servers cost anywhere from about R8k up to hundreds or thousands..

How many users, what apps do you need to run, do you also want to upgrade the OS etc etc etc.....

Could also poke the guys at Xperien and check if they have any refurbs worth it. Sometimes you score a gem or 2 - got some Inspiron's with Dual core Xeon's,4gigs ram and 320Gig SAS drives for 8k a pop

Well server 2003 could run on just about anything,2k8...eh...yeah

I take it those are SATA 1GB drives. Never use SATA drives in servers, unless it's in a testing environment. Use 10K or 15K SAS drives.
Or unless you don't really care about the speed then it probably will not be to big of an issue.

They are Drives designed to run a RAID for a server environment (Can't remember all the details and not going to go dig through invoices).
Cost was about 2.5x normal SATA drives.

How long is a peace of string ? Give some details like how many concurrent users (how many will be working on the server at any one time), what apps etc you can work out Ram requirements from that.
