My girlfriend got me curious this weekend - she somehow wound up in a jewelry store, and somehow ended up with an engagement ring picture on her cellphone - and then again today, a store for some reason emailed us a list of engagement rings and pictures.

I'm not ready for marrage, and we've only been dating for 11-months - so its out of the question.

But, it got me thinking, the rings she had emailed and saw were around the region of about R22,000 - which to me was far more reasonable than I expected, now for the question:

Obviously everyone is different, and their situations are different, what to you is a reasonable amount to spend on a ring? I remember something about 2x salary or something - but thats not going to happen :p

Wow that's quite forward on the part of your gf. I don't think anything over 10k. Even 10k seems a lot to me for a ring. Then again i don't know what the prices of engagement rings are.

As long as it looks pretty and has a little bit of diamond in it, i reckon i'd be happy :)

A Ring!>!">!!?!?!?!?!?!JMFJ(!<!<!

22K for a ring!!!! For a women!!!???

She's not gonna buy you a ring for that much..........

NO WAY. If she loves you then you don't need a bloody expensive ring..

It seems that the way to a womens heart is most definitely money.

Its a stage - think its cause all her friends are getting married - she hasn't said anything to me directly - but I've overheard her on the phone, etc.

LOL - yes Pooky - I'm straight, for a woman....

And AFAIK - girls don't buy guys rings.

I've seen rings priced at around R120,000 <-- which is why I've never really bothered with the thought of marriage.

I don't believe the day has actually come! I agree 100% with Pooky on this one:eek::D

Had one custom made and clocked in at R20k, with it being valued at R24k. Definitely worth going that route rather than the retail route.
You can get something for R13k or so, if you're willing to settle for a bit less, but come now Mr. Rapid, we both know you won't settle for the bottom end :p

Edit - For the record, the jeweler that did our ring said he had a diamond of around R100k available, should we want it, so that gives you an idea of how quickly it can get expensive.

Lol it's never a stage with a woman. If she is dropping hints like that she wants to get married regardless of where you are at in your relationship. In her mind that wont change, unless of course you sleep with her sister. :D

I spent around 10k but got a really good deal. Valuation certificate says R23400 ex vat.

The rule of thumb is 3xyour monthly take home salary.

3 times your monthly salary?

HOLY CRAP!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Gosh you know as a woman i can say honestly that i would love a kick ass diamond ring but i would feel blady upset if i knew my husband to be spent 3 times his salary on it. What a waste. It's only a ring!

I'd also prefer having one made - pretty sure I can find some diamonds somewhere - just watch Black Diamond (or what ever that movie was with Leonardo DiCrappyO

THREE TIMES? Is take home after all deductions, like rent, medical aid, food, etc? Cause currently that leaves her owing me money for the ring :D

And just why not???

I hate these stupid stereotypes that the MAN has to do everything for the women, and they just sit around getting rings and gifts.

Don't women buy the men a wedding band? As opposed to a calling it a ring. It's the least you could do IMO :D

Dude - she washes my dishes, cleans my clothes, does my ironing, feeds me, brings me beer....

*runs from forum feminists.*

- DISCLAIMER: Kidding - she only loads the dishwasher, and feeds me. :(

She sounds like a catch to me! Marry her before you get lumbered with a lazy undomesticated skank. *giggle*

lolololol, you're screwed now...

Yip the rule of thumb is 3X monthly salary. That sounds a bit crazy though. My humble opinion is if you spend below 10k you're a cheapass... The rings around R100k are actually a bit too big and somewhat impractical as well as theft/mugging invitations so wouldn't go that high either.
