Yip the rule of thumb is 3X monthly salary. That sounds a bit crazy though. My humble opinion is if you spend below 10k you're a cheapass... The rings around R100k are actually a bit too big and somewhat impractical as well as theft/mugging invitations so wouldn't go that high either.

Can you really not get a nice sized ring for 10k?

Go by diamond size if you're more comfortable with it; 0.25 carats isn't bad to start off with? It shouldn't be more than 10k. It also depends on what carat gold you want with it.

Well, my two mates who were married got themselves titanium rings...it set their partners back around R250 for REALLY cool looking rings. Not really comparing apples with apples here I'm afraid.

I got a .62 carat J colour and SI1 clarity for 3500 from a connection in Fish Hoek. I think it's a fine balance between the size and clarity/colour that you have to find. Had the ring made in 18ct white gold for another 6k odd. Designed it myself. Just the extra effort it takes to do it yourself means a hell of a lot to the woman you're with.

That's really cheap! My ring is 0.5 carats, set in 18ct white gold and cost R13,000 after a discount!

Which is a replica of the above. It's a Shimansky ring but another jeweller made mine.

My wifes ring cost us R3'500 and was validated at R15'000 - bought it direct from a legit goldsmith who we personally know. Shows the mark up but lets leave that for another thread.

What we saved on the ring, the money was used towards the wedding. the R11'500 allowed us to get an amazing wine estate outside Somerset West - we where given 2 outside venues and their inside venue should it rain.

Sad to say that this was little of 2 years ago and the exact same estate will now charge R30K just for the morning for the 1 outside venue.

But whatever you decide, for a woman its something they will keep for the rest of their lives (even if you divorce, ask my ex-wife ) so spending a bit more is worth it.
