Mid 2009 MacBook Pro 2.8GHz C2D | 4GB DDR3 | 256GB SSD or 500GB HDD | 9600GT 512MB + 9400GT | 15.4" LED
SD card reader

Condition is perfect, scratch free, I have looked after it very well, it looks like new.
 
What OS?

Several opinions on a mid-2012 13" MBP over in classifieds a few months back, that thought R9k was way overpriced...
 
Macs are pretty much never worth selling.
I remember buying the iMac for R14000 and then not being able to sell it for R1000.
 
Is it possible to get a secondhand mid 2012 for 8-9K

Yep.
We use it to browse the net and my wife uses it to watch TED videos while she works out.
I couldn't even update the Flash player as it is not supported on old OS.
Had to find an alternate flash player that would allow Youtube.
Such a pain.

Ah. Check classifieds. A Mybb was advertising one obo his ex-wife. She moved to Nelspruit(?) before I could get to see it. If that's in your neck of the woods, it might still be available.
 
I thought the re-sale value was supposed to be good? Or is that just if they are a year old?

Or was I thinking about iPhone and iPad?

I guess there are simply not enough Mac users in South Africa? By all accounts, resale values are very good overseas... Trawling through US or UK Mac forums, and you will regularly find users talking about how little they lost on their sale... I think that might be the case with rapid-turnovers... It appears to be quite common for users to hang-on to their Mac for 1-2 years, before selling... That way they avoid competing with too many model updates...

Personally, I would consider upgrading to a more powerful MBP at the right price, but would only be willing to go back to 2011... No real reason for that, just kind of a mental line in the sand, given that my MBP is a mid-2012 and is still purring along... for a Mac Pro/Mini/iMac, I would be willing to look at 2010 models even, but not much before then...

Would I do the same with a Windows machine? No. I would never consider getting a 2nd hand laptop/pc that is not an Apple. Arguments for and against that view, but that's my take on things....

Well, more than an equivalent machine today with exactly the same specs. (keeping in mind things such as the screen is better than most R6k laptop screens I have seen) Plus, it's a Mac, so that put's it in it's own price bracket. Or am I being unreasonable?
 
All intel now.
It all ages and looses value.
Why would you pay more only to downgrade?

Unless you were doing something like live music with an mbp which is more stable than a windows laptop, it's not worth it to go backwards.

I agree with you... Personally I am wanting to go for a Retina though, for design purposes. I have a 2560x1440 screen for my Desktop, and I am wondering how on earth I ever managed to work with my MBP's 1440x900 for so long. :confused:

That's a mindset, not a fact.
Unfortunately it's a prevalent mindset in the mac community despite logic and technology being discussed.
My wife argued the fact with me when I told her her iMac was a joke compared to my pc.
She was adamant that a dual core machine with 2 gb of ram was better than my i5 2500k machine with 16gb of ram and a powerful graphics card. why? Because it's a mac.

Until we tried to sell it and no one wanted it, tried to update most of the software and couldn't.
Battled to run any software later than a certain year because it was just too slow.
