How much is your insurance excess?

About 2k if I remember. 800 or less just for the windscreen I think.

Various things affect the excess whether it's another driver, how long they have their license, if they're a learner driver etc.

Insurance is with Hollard through a broker.

R2 000 excess through a broker with Hollard Insurance.

I always stipulate this myself because any more than R2 000 starts getting really painful when some other idiot drives into you (even if you do get it back from their insurance after a couple months).

Household - R1000; Houseowner NIL; Motor NIL; Commercial (rented houses) R1000. All Santam. Most claims have been settled within a few weeks, but a claim for a council lorry that demolished a wall has been going on for 14 months and I get conflicting reasons therefor - assessor change, incorrect lorry driver, dispute about time of accident,

My Dad has one of his cars insured with Vantage Insurance. A few months back someone bumped the car from befind while my sister was driving, the repair cost was around R65k, and excess was 10k.. Basic excess was 5k and another 5k (double excess) since she has her license for less than 2 years.

Ouch, that's some expensive school fees right there :/

The way I see it, the whole point of car insurance is that you're gambling you WILL need it and your insurer is gambling you won't (just like your medical insurance). Why agree to a prohibitively high excess that gets in the way of you being able to access the insurance you're paying for so responsibly every month? In my experience you'll also be surprised by how little extra a huge reduction in your excess will add to your premium, so it's well worth asking for a few options to compare when you get quoted.

Waiver of Excess, therefore for me it's 'nil'. And it is quite doable for personal insurance without breaking the bank.

Excess waiver isn't exactly free as you pay for it every month.

But yes it would still take years to catch up to the usual cash excess.
