How much per hour

Really? They dont look so well paid here compared to other languages.

There was no SAP average, but when I did the google I get: SAP ABAP Developer $106,000
http://www.indeed.com/salary/SAP-ABAP-Developer.html

Using the same website to check C devs showed that they average around $72 000 a year while the C++ devs earn around $94 000 a year. Both less than the SAP devs.

Im not confident on the reliability of your opinion. Yup, more googling doesnt seem to support your opinion at all. I have checked several websites and C and C++ developers earn significantly less than SAP devs. In fact, C and C++ devs seem to earn less than a lot of other programming languages.

I wouldn't go by anything you find on the internet about salaries - especially surveys. People who earn significantly above the "published" average don't tend to fill in surveys or give their salary numbers on forums, causing a strong bias downwards from the real average. Furthermore, there are plenty of very junior jobs out there that utilize C/C++ - this will bring the average down - I expect that one of the reasons that SAP is higher is also because the people working in that field are simply more experienced on average. A better question would be "for a given level of seniority, how do they compare?". This will have a radically different answer.

Also, the areas and sectors with the highest compensation ("big company" silicon valley, system software, finance, etc.), often have ok basic salaries, but a significant chunk of the compensation (anywhere from 20-1000%), comes from cash bonuses, stock options, RSUs, ESPP programs, profit sharing, etc., which are generally not accounted for in those numbers. I can tell you from experience, that those numbers are all very low for total compensation.

From what I've gleaned from friends and colleagues (and ex-colleagues) in the US, it seems that C/C++ usage is disproportionately high in the fields I mentioned above, so my educated guess is that (for a given level of seniority at least) Semaphore isn't necessarily that far from the mark.

You have amazing google skills. Now apply that to South African markets. Coming from a big software house in SA i know for fact that C++ devs get paid very very well.

Any developer stuck on one language is on a road to failure anyways. Developers need to be versatile in their craft. I've done everything from embedded development to drivers, to web development.

Thanks for all the answers guys. I knew the question have been asked before, was just wanting to get the latest answer.

I charge an average of R325 per hour, but most times I give a set price per webpage and it depends on what the client wants - in terms of features and NOT the amount of pages.

Unfortunately that answer will never change dude. Unless you dont need the money and youre just doing it to keep busy and not care if you dont get paid or not

The OP is wanting to get indications of the amount to charge for their services which is equivalent to
... the latest answer
Your answer (the amount you would quote) now is different to the amount you would quote, say 10 years ago. So, the answer does change.

and how many hours do you actually charge per month?

because I very much doubt you are doing anywhere close to 160 hours (8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 4 weeks a month)

even more appropriate, how many per year.

genuinelly interested.

Projects are charged differently, but when a customer comes to me and says I need a few hours of your time in a consulting capacity it is around R 650

thats why "what is a good hourly" is a BS question. people think "wow, these okes are charging R400/h, thats R64000 a month!!!" when in fact that is not really true.

I normally ask around 650 per hour

My wife is a PM at Std Bank and keeps telling me to charge around this amount up to R800 PH. It feels like extortion though and can't bring myself to do it.
I only recently upped my rate from R385 to R450.
Think I need to get over myself and get my rates up to the R600 mark.

I don't understand what you mean - or why you say that. Why is it not really true?
