I life 2 classmates from claremont (cape town) to CPUT each morning and then in the afternoon drop them at there houses which are on the way to my house, the maximum distance is about 13km from my house to the campus.

How much should I charge the people that ride with me each month.

Deviding the amount you spend on petrol to campus and back by three would seem logical to me.

I think,... that if you are charging passengers then it would void the terms of your insurance

Not unless you were making a profit, i.e. running a business. Splitting costs is hardly using your car as a business vehicle.

So car pooling should only benefit the passengers?

A "Car Pool" is just that. A pool of cars, My car this week, yours next week, friend A the following week.

Each car pooler provides a car for the other poolers in rotation.

Insurance Company still needs to give the OK though.

Carrying passengers for remuneration equals taxi.

Right, insurance companies are interested in who pays for the petrol that gos into the car they insure. Sharing costs with passengers is not a business transaction and is not the business of an insurer.

1. It should cover the cost of the petrol you are using to do it.
2. You should weigh how much of a impact is it on your day, and add a small fee that you are comfortable with as compensation for such.

While you're at it get them to sign a waiver promising not to hold you responsible in the event of an accident.

We waited till the first Friday (most traffic etc etc), filled up the tank, went to Stellies, came back the afternoon, filled her up again. Took the amount, divided by 3, rounded it up by a reasonable amount and then multiplied it over the amount of days we go in a week. Worked out quite nice. Whenever we had extra passengers, they paid about the same we pay each day.

carpooling is more of an inconvenience as you can't pop in at the shops after work etc

Nah, all depends on your setup. We were a bunch of friends, so we just asked well beforehand eg. 'Listen, I need to go and do X on Thursday mmkay?'

if you know how much fuel you used and km driven, then it should be pretty easy to work out the petrol costs. Also I would add the amount you spend on car servicing per year / 365 days. Then add that amount to each day (divided by amount of people using the car of course). I believe there is no need to make a profit here, they are your friends after all.
