How much would a mobile app for a website cost?

Hi Guys

I am thinking of having a mobile app for one of my blogs. I have done a bit of research, I see the are many online websites which you can design mobile apps for blogs/websites free. I have also seen a wordpress plugin that does it.

Has anyone used one of the service? Please advise on which one may be easier to work with. I dont have the time, that's the reason I'd like to out source this project. But if there is one of this online services or plugins that make the process quicker, then I might have to do it my self.
Or anyone who is willing to do it for me through these services can, and just name the price.

Or if there's someone who can code it from scratch, i'd like to know the prices.

Get a responsive theme for your blog from guys like Obox themes (Cape Town based) - better than an app as it can be viewed on everything from a feature phone up to an internet TV.

Going the app route is going to limit you and going to cost you serious cash.

So unless you got R30+K to throw around, rather pay R1K for a world class responsive theme for your blog.

Thanks for the advice.

The reason I wanted to go the app route is because I wanted to take advantage of the "push-notification" feature, and other features that do not come with responsive design. I thought an app would be a better choice because a person does not have to input my site URL to visit, they would just click an icon on their screen, which is much easier.

I do appreciate your advise.

Just don't fall for the "build it and they will come". You could also start off basic with just an app that launches your website in the browser, this is very popular.

If you want a full app you need to identify your target market and the more platforms you want to support the more it will cost you.

Agree with the responsive approach. Personally I hate that every website now asks/tell you to install an app.
 
I would never install an app for a website

I see. Ddnt know about the option of the app that jus opens in a new browser. I think need to do even more research on this. Or maybe download other websites apps to get a feel of things.

I dont need traditional content websites in an app.

modern webapp websites, like trello for instance is a different story. here apps make more sense.

Yep, try and get a responsive design first. You could code an app yourself if you really need to by using http://phonegap.com/.

If all you do is launch a URL, a couple of lines of code would suffice. You code everything using HTML, CSS and JS. So it would be easy peasy for you.

Though, I do agree that certain websites should not be an app just because it is the in thing...
 
Been fiddling with phonegap the past few weeks. How big is phonegap (apps developed with phonegap) in SA?
 
Not sure how big it is. There is a handful of people I know that have played with Phonegap or Xamarin.

I do see your point of view. But I believe there are lots of benefits (or advantages) having a mobile app for what you call "traditional content website".

But yeah, i do see your point.

Thanks, I'll check out this phone gap. Another good thing about apps is that you can monetize them. I have downloaded a few apps for some of the blogs I follow, and I find it easier to be just notified straight from my device when there is a new article.

And apps have loads other features!
 
Seems like a lot of people are against this app thing. Maybe it's not such a good idea after all? :confused:
