How much would a mobile app for a website cost?

Just don't fall for the "build it and they will come". You could also start off basic with just an app that launches your website in the browser, this is very popular.

Bad idea. That sort of app would never make it to the AppStore on iOS if that's all it did. Its against Apple's guidelines. And for good reason, too.

If you want a full app you need to identify your target market and the more platforms you want to support the more it will cost you.

Personally if you want to offer push notifications and an RSS feed along with your blog as well as other features - an app is absolutely the way to go.

This doesn't mean you must build across all platforms from the start. Pick a platform (Not Blackberry) and go from there. If things go very well, extend it to other platforms.

I'd advise against an app for now.
Unless you got added functionality, what's the point?

If all you're looking for for now is push notification then look into socket.io instead.

There are 2 things to remember if you want an app, especially for IOS:
1 - Developer license - $99
2 - The easiest way to do it is with a mac - R6000+
(I'm not sure if you can create an IOS app without xcode .. and that only runs on mac)

Follow Tanders advice about making sure you offer more in your app than what you would via your web interface.


Phonegap is pretty cool. Busy doing an app using it now. Deployd on the backend, angularjs on the front and it's running pretty smoothly, even on my old android cronker...

A previous app we did had issues with page transitions that ended up being related to the hardware acceleration and 3d effects.

I had no idea about the stuff u just mentioned here. At the moment I have no time for DIY, since I was hoping to ask a freelancer to do it for me. But it seems like it will turn out to be more expensive than I thought!

To get an app in the App Store you need a developer license, yes.

If this is a one time thing it may be much cheaper to just outsource it. Unless you have lots of time on your hands to study iOS / android dev.

Hi Guys

I am thinking of having a mobile app for one of my blogs. I have done a bit of research, I see the are many online websites which you can design mobile apps for blogs/websites free. I have also seen a wordpress plugin that does it.

Has anyone used one of the service? Please advise on which one may be easier to work with. I dont have the time, that's the reason I'd like to out source this project. But if there is one of this online services or plugins that make the process quicker, then I might have to do it my self.
Or anyone who is willing to do it for me through these services can, and just name the price.

Or if there's someone who can code it from scratch, i'd like to know the prices.

You can have these apps built by real good developers at great prices on platforms like freelancer.com, etc.

You can also visit codecanyon.com and look under the mobile apps section. There are a number of Android and iOS apps that will turn your blog into a great mobile app - and you only need to change a few settings for them to work.
