Netflix's plan to avoid TV-like adpocalypse

Netflix is finely tuning its cheaper ad-supported plans to ensure they don't end up like linear TV, which became infamous for bombarding viewers with long, loud ad breaks.

Aside from content being available on demand instead of broadcasted according to a schedule, a major part of Netflix and other video streaming services' appeal over TV in their early years was that they had no commercial breaks.

I have some news. Streaming will begin replicating what traditional tv is because it's the only model that generates a profit. Literally the only difference will be that it is online and on-demand. Essentially a glorified PVR experience.

The difference is you can use an adblocker on Netfilx.

If it helps keep pricing low and make it more affordable, then I am not against ads completely. What gets me though is when I am watching a doccie on Youtube for example, I am like if I have to see one more Takealot or Monday.com add I am going to scream! Oh, and that Vodacom ad of the farmer that falls down in his field and then drives in his bakkie with some kind of Vodacom solution that I have have no idea what it is about....WTF is that? lol. Some ads as a kid I used to love actually. Ads these days though are just meh! Where are the kind of ads like the Joko tea one with the guy at the airport or the Nandos one where the womans' boobs blocks her view of her chips on the plate. I dont mind watching good funny ads.

You should be worried...

You don't want ANY ads near your content at all. Its better to lower the quality of the stream for a cheaper option, or remove other perks. But you do not want any ads.

Once ads are introduced, you are not the customer anymore, the advertiser becomes the customer. Your content now becomes "advertiser friendly" and you on the premium tiers are effected too. With all the kark netflix releases lately, you can already see the advertiser friendly effect.

Essentially everything will be about making you watch the ads they want you to watch. So your content recommendations will be about what generates the most as revenue. New shows will be created with advertising in mind etc etc
As you say you are no longer the customer the advertisers are.

Is it only me that had to raise my sub level to get something resembling 720p?
Was already on "standard' which is supposed to be to 1080p & there was no way it was even 720p.
Upped to premium & issue fixed.....skelm

There's a difference between resolution and quality.
