How NHI will affect you

So you do not contemplate that this service could be of inferior quality than private medical services ? Tender money squandered, substandard service, strikes ....

As I said in my first post, private medical services would, IMO, eventually certify "NHI" to make up for lost revenue. Then and only then, will I stop with the medical aid membership. Thus in effect enjoying the same service, for FREE. :D

EDIT: well not really free, but you know what I mean...

We must not rely on our mineral wealth. That should be seen as a stepping stone and we should try avoid dependency to our mineral resources over time. We should focus on modernizing our factories as well. So what we makes, stays here until we are ready to ship it. Unfortunately, countries like China which screw us over with their exchange rate and slave labor. We also dont just have the mineral industry. Our agricultural industry is fantastic as well.

Government ought to invest heavily in the health and skills of the population.

Asian UNSKILLED labour is more productive than that of SA because it is better educated.
Asian SKILLED labour is cheaper than ours, because it is abundant.

I prefer to "pay more" rather than "free" / "pay less".

I always pay R3000 per service for the original car dealer rather than R500 for someone I don't trust.

Yeah, our country has loads of dumb people :(

Then how about this... the same three doctors that run Milpark ER (The best ER in the country) run the Baragwaneth ER. All the best doctors in the country have both private practices and positions at government hospitals.

PS: After the upgrade at Baragwaneth its actually a way better ER then Milpark but don't tell anyone that.

I dont think you have any idea of the new system will work. The new system means you will pay R500 to the original car dealer ....not the R3000, he would claim the other R2500 from government. You always biatch how your taxes are not being well spent...well heres your chance to get your cash back from the guavament!

I admire your optimism, you make it sound so simple.
So from day one for just R500 that we will pay to the government we will get medical cover, hospital cover, dental cover and chronic medication if you happen to have a chronic disease?
All of this will be at the same standard and level of service that we currently receive from private cover and all without having to pay anything extra in? Is that how it will work?

You can already get chronic medication for free... without the NHI. Go to any public hospital. I often get my Ritalin for free from public hospitals if I have a morning to spare.

The only difference I notice with the NHI is now I can go to my regular doctor instead of having to go to a public hospital. Im not sure if it will be of the same standard, but I dont imagine my regular doctor dropping his standards too much.

The problem is that the load on private doctors increases, and you may very well not receive the same level of service that you normally would have. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Agreed, this'll definitely 'dilute' the private hospitals/doctors service and response time. But we'll still be paying more, for less... so who can blame current medical aid subscribers from complaining.

They dont have to subscribe to the service if they dont want to. They just wont be illegible for government business or something like that.
