How NHI will affect you

I would feel much better if they used all the money that will go to NHI and use it only for infrastructure projects. Trains, roads, power, water and telecoms. That will produce tonnes of work and then everyone can spend money on their own heath care which will reduce the pressure on state hospitals. If only in my head.

I dont think I can believe anyone who works for medical insurance. End. I wish they could have got this information from someone without a vested interest in the field.

Save for NHI? do you really need to save for an extra 2% vat? Seriously? How many people does that apply to... 4? For those people who need to "save", I would suggest dropping your over priced medical aid, and use the NHI.

Im happy for the NHI, I just hope it gets implemented at least half way decently as its going to help the majority of South Africans.

The middle class of SA is already struggling. Will this be the final killer?
Yeah, you are going to die!!! Run!!!!! Its the super duper killer. Official Zim 2.0 stuff. Um.. what else can we get all hysterical about?

If you are middle class and this kills you... you are not really middle class :D More like.. upper lower class perhaps?

+1 Never trust any insurance. End!

<sarcasm>Yea, insurance is the pits.</sarcasm>

I really should have stopped paying my medical aid and rather docked up R40k when my wife had to go to hospital? No thanks, medical aid is money well spent.

At the very least you should have good hospital cover, what happens when you are in a bad car accident? Will you be able to pay for a couple of weeks in intensive care out of your pocket? Do you really have a few hundred thousand rands hanging around?

Or would you trust your life to the hands of state nurses that strike and let babies die?

Get that R800 - R1000 medical aid, you only need to go to hospital once and it has paid for itself for a few decades.

P.S. I don't agree with the people that go to a specialist every other week when they have a little booboo, for that you can go to a clinic or gp and pay out of your own pocket.

Super low class comment^^. :)

Seriously do you believe this country has the resources to make this work?

I believe that a lot of the private institutions will get themselves "NHI Certified" to make up for the drop in medical aid membership in the end. I will be one of the first ones to give up my expensive medical aid when this is implemented. If it happens in my lifetime that is...

Im ganna join you on that one :D

Erm, hospital plans are around R800-1k dude...and yeah, covers you for little else than hospital emergencies. Welcome to life.

I've been on medical aid for over 8 years now so I have a fair idea of what they cost. My ex was a dependent on my medical aid for many years and I'm on a fairly good plan (decent in hospital + out of hospital + chronic & oncology cover). My point is she is now 'saving' around R300 a month to be on what is essentially a hospital plan. Its a complete rip-off imo.

Most hospital plans do not only cover emergencies only .... it covers hospitalisation per se.

Yes, according to big banks, we are the richest country in terms of mineral wealth.

So neither you nor the banks ever heard of the resource curse ?

I will be one of the first ones to give up my expensive medical aid when this is implemented. If it happens in my lifetime that is...

So you do not contemplate that this service could be of inferior quality than private medical services ? Tender money squandered, substandard service, strikes ....

The only problem that I have with the NHI, is getting exposed to public hospital nurses and doctors... and from experience that a friend of mine had, you would die from a non life threatening problem at a public hospital because of imcompetance and laziness, which again is so characteristic of those unionised wekkers.

I'd say that 'only problem' is problematic enough to make you stay away!

Im sure they have. I did not until I went to wiki... still seems like a non-issue. There seem to be studies that refute the concept. Two in fact. Though your comment did get me thinking. We must not rely on our mineral wealth. That should be seen as a stepping stone and we should try avoid dependency to our mineral resources over time. We should focus on modernizing our factories as well. So what we makes, stays here until we are ready to ship it. Unfortunately, countries like China which screw us over with their exchange rate and slave labor. We also dont just have the mineral industry. Our agricultural industry is fantastic as well.

I get to go to my own doctor if he is part of the NHI system (afaik), so if his or her service is crap Ill let him know!

I am worried that many doctors will leave SA because of the NHI.

My wife is a doctor (and has recently entered SA... so we gained one doctor there :D)and is not bothered by this, our family friend doctor though is bitching and whining because he see`s it as communism :D He hates commies :D
