She has hereditary high cholesterol. She's scared of red meat and fat.
My doctor (fitness freak, skinny and 15 years my junior) asked me how do I get my "good" cholesterol count so high? Apparently it's disgusting. Answer is simple. lamb chops! My cholesterol count has been stable for close to 30 years since they've being insisting on taking it. The 1st doc wanted me to survive on gravel road!!
 
Less than I want too. Lamb is too expensive these days and just steak every time gets boring.
 
I love braaing and I'm very good at cooking. I don't like cleaning up though so I don't braai often
 
Who can afford to braai....oh loadshedding....we dont have a choice.
But, normally on a Sunday......with a few whiskeys and Belgium beers thrown in for fun.
 
I must say that I am privileged to pay close to cost for lamb, and not any lamb, Hantam lamb, but the farmers up there are now also gaming with beef on a larger scale. I also have easy access to very well-priced venison from the other side of my family, without asking, they will send some meat my way. I get the rest of my meat from a local butcher or sometimes from Food Lover's, where the butcher knows his stuff and the prices are reasonable. I buy almost all of my poultry from Lazena or Woolworths, and again, not unreasonably priced given the climate.

I am very good friends with some wholesale fruit and vegetable wholesalers. Yes, I have Portugeuse friends. Good bartering on this front.

Wood I get from the sawmills, at a good price, but you have to load up. Since I am nested close to the wine lands, when the vineyard is pulled, I am quick to load up on that too. It burns quick and hot, but it gets meat done to perfection.

When it comes to braai, I can't really complain. I roast a lot too on the Weber, but that meat will last me for most of the week. The same with braai, I braai for 2-3 days worth of food. It saves me a load of time.

I forgot to add, I have friends in the Free State who are also generous with their price, but this is occasional bartering between them and their butchery contacts in the Western Cape.

You should get yourself a rocket stove, but one of those fancier ones with the clay shell (EcoZoom, Mabula etc).

Fuel efficient, add a cast iron pot or pan and you can cook your regular old Knorr Boloroni on it, boils a camp kettle very quickly. Had to use it a lot when we moved into a phase 1 of a new complex and electricity was a problem (not even loadshedding at the time).

One of those little butane gas stoves are way cheaper and efficient (hamburgers, potjies... one of those gas canisters lasts for a very long time) but the real fire stove is way more fun to use.

These things are neat. Incredibly versatile.
