How often do you upgrade your smartphone?

With new devices coming to market every year it can be difficult to keep up with the latest technology,

How often do you upgrade your smartphone to a newer model?
 
Whenever they release a new iOS 11 beta, I do that upgrade.
 
I am using mine sine 4 years. Touchwood so far so sood.
 
smartphones last longer these days, unless its just Apple phones.
I still have the same iphone6 that is 3 years old now and Im not in a rush to upgrade it, will see what the next model is like.
I remember in the earlier android days that the battery would have been wrecked and the OS as slow as heck by the time 2 years was up.
This was around the time of the galaxy S4/S5 though.
 
Im still on Note4, still decent and reliable phone. There is nothing new released, just battery draining gimmicks to show off to your friends and forget about.
 
Usually once every 2 years when my contract runs out though that's just because I can. If I have to then I'll be able to live with the same iPhone for much longer.
 
2-3 years and always a mid range phone. I don't get people who get 24 month contracts every year just to get the latest flagship.
 
Got my current phone in 2014 and a month or two (If I have enough ebucks) away from purchasing a new one.
This 3 years has been the longest I've ever held onto a phone though
 
2 year contract, however they normally give me early upgrade so more like 20 to 21 months. I go fairly entry level smart phones on the R150 to R200 contracts. Never had a phone worth more than R2500.

Funny thing is I compared my phone the other day (P8 Lite) to some of the top phones that all cost over 10K and I was surprised at how well my al cheapo compared. Will never understand people who pay 5 to 7 times the price for something that is functionally only about 20% better.
 
I haven't had a good record with smartphones. Each time my intention was to keep the phone beyond the contract but that hasn't happened.

Dec 2012. Galaxy S2. When upgrade time came I fell over on the M4 while out cycling and shattered the screen.
Then upgraded to Xperia Z2. Had it for about 6 months and it fell on the treadmill at gym and got caught between the belt and frame. Back and front completely crunched.

Luckily I had just started a job with a company phone so didnt get another personal phone (the Z2 could still switch on and take calls). I've still got the company Galaxy S5 for about 2.5 years now and god is it lagging.

I took out a personal contract with Telkom mobile almost 2 years ago once the Z2 contract was up (Galaxy S6 due for upgrade next month).

The plan was (still is) to keep the S6 until it is not usable. About 2 weeks ago I nearly achieved this. I bought some fresh cream to use when cooking dinner. Packed it into my lunch bag with my phone and boxes etc when leaving work. Dropped the bag and the cream exploded. phone is ok except for the speaker being a bit muffled. I don't really listen to music on the phone so its fine.

When I do upgrade, like the last time I won't go with the latest model (S8) but opt for a cheaper S7.

Edit: TLDR: You shouldn't let me near your phone.
 
Upgrades are OS dependent.

If my current phone can run the latest Android I stay with it.... if not I go to a current or new midrange phone that can.
 
Got a note 4 from 2015 and I'm in no hurry to upgrade. I think this phone will keep me going for another year and then I'll evaluate. Can't bear the thought of taking a 24 month contract so I try to purchase my phone and stick with prepaid.
