How Shoprite beat Pick n Pay
The Outlier produced an excellent analysis of Shoprite and Pick n Pay’s performance over the past 20 years, which revealed how Shoprite has outperformed its closest rival. [Daily Investor]

The article shows clearly that Shoprite is outperforming Pick n Pay. I don't think it does a good job of explaining HOW they have managed to do that, which I thought was "promised" by the article heading (except for the poor management part).

It looks like its because Shoprite has more stores than PnP except Zimbabwe?

So to summarise the article, Shoprite beat Pick n Pay because PnP's CEO former CEO Pieter Boone was in tenure, nothing further for how they lost, plenty to that they lost.

Maybe. But then even in 2007 Shoprite already had 55% more stores than Pick n Pay, but their revenue was the same. I think they are blaming everything on the former Pick n Pay CEO Pieter Boone. Why did they keep him at his highly job for 16 years?

Richard Brasher was the CEO of PnP for most of the 2010's

And Brasher had the idea that he could screw franchisees left, right and center. Yes, he grew sales, but also damaged the brand

I always found Pick n Pay expensive, I wondered back then how long it would take for people to wake up to that fact.

Took long enough but they sure woke up. Service is one thing but pricing will definitely push you down the stairs when your competitors are priced below you.
