I was just wondering... How strict are cybersmart with their "Our ISP only" policy?

On their website it says, "we will degrade your service" (if you are found to be using another ISP)

... What does that mean?

Anyone who has any experience?

I'm asking this because I'm intrigued by their Night Rider package. Why can't other ISP's be this inventive?

I always wonder about places that threaten their clients and potential clients. Does this business method work? I know it works for some religions, but commercial concerns ???

I used them for a couple of months. No problems with their service. Then I glanced over their Terms Of Use.

I didn't agree with it. So I cancelled. I'd rather pay a bit more than have an ISP tell me how I should use MY internet services.

I use both Cybersmart and Openweb never had any issue, using them for 3 years now

I think the only problem will arise if you call their support and ask for help - I have heard that they will turn you down if they detect that you have used other ISPs.

I haven't used them myself, so don't quote me on that though ;)

They won't know if you have used other ISPs....

Hi froot,

Thanks for your input. I did some searching and came across the thread that I was referring to: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=1805392&postcount=3

I was merely stating that I had recalled them not willing to provide proper support if they do such checks.

I do realise that. I even spoke to them, they said that different ISPs may ask you to use different settings (I have never heard about a difference between using ISPs???) but they don't have a problem if you use more than one.
The thing is that they can't open a web page or make a phone call and find out if you are using more than one ISP.

Most definitely. I also do not see them having any solid evidence which proves that you have used a different ISP.

When I was with them at the beginning of the year I asked them about that and they said they dont mind.
Its just that they wont provide help if your with another ISP and the problem is caused by you using another ISP (which is unlikely, if not near impossible IMO)

Been with them for close on 2 years and during that time have used a Webafrica local only account and very often make use of Axxess Prepaid.

Never had any issues.

They just don't want the hassle of having people bothering the call centre with support, that is due to you messing around with your router and not being able to get back on with them.

As long as my details are correct and DNS settings are set to auto-detect - I chop and change at will - that being because RouteSentry does either not agree with my router or my cerebal matter :p :D

So yes you can, they won't know - unless you tell them ;)

Quick question, is that terms and condition anti competative ?
Even though it maybe not be enforced it is still there?

Yeah, i have heard a lot of negative stuff about Cybersmart...
Apparently they won't let you use other E-mail accounts either, thats in their T&C's!
I thought it would be safer to just go with Axxess, no contracts, no hassles.
Even though Cybersmart has some great options, grow for life looks awesome!

I think they are refering do different DNS servers. but nowadays the DNS is on auto so there are no setting other than different a username and password. I use cybersmart for nearly a year now and use a Telkom account too and i use their router too. no problem what so ever!
