How Takealot crushed Makro

Takealot is South Africa’s largest online shopping platform, with over 2,000 employees and sales of around R1 billion per month.

Takealot is owned by Naspers and operates the country’s top ecommerce platforms - Takealot.com, Superbalist.com, and Mr D Food.

Makro could do well if they could just sort out their logistics, last year black Friday my colleague waited 2 months for his delivery!

And the new MASSIVE Cornubia location that opened up in Durban a while back has a whole wing dedicated to online collections - I don't think I've ever seen even one person using it to fetch an online order.

Brick and Mortar shops should rather not enter the online trading industry as they clearly do not have the ability to get it right.

Takealot should also tread lightly in that space:

:P

oh god. we to see more of x killed, crushed, ****edup y articles that literally have no correlation, or will there be a proper study that's peer reviewed?

Many online shoppers wait for weeks
That is what you base your article on?
Makro is still open and hardly crushed. christ...

Unless Makro gets this right, it will always be seen as the poor man’s alternative to Takealot.
Oh please.
/facepalm

This is an opinion piece.
noshit.

Takealot tells you when it will be delivered before you pay. Whether it is a week or a month, they give you the date and you know when to expect it. Those items that take a long time t o deliver is because Takealot knows the suppliers don't know how to get stuff on time.

Makro on the other hand have no idea what they are doing, and we are talking before lockdown

Most of the stuff I want to buy is "not available online". If they stop treating their online store as a ad/showcase platform frustrating the hell out of shoppers things are not going to get better. And why on this green planet do I need to select a store and depend on its stock levels at that store? - I say what I want and where I want it and THEY figure out how to get it to me. If takealot and loot can sort out shipping between their Cape Town and Joburg warehouses then so should Makro.

What's interesting is how tiny Makro's stockroom is for a store that carries as much stock as they do, Makros fundamental layout needs to change if they want to take online seriously.

There's no way they can fit an efficient online logistics department in their current stockrooms.

I just collect from Takealot. Their warehouse is close to me, and often I collect the same day I order.

Takealot warehouse in CPT is right across the road from Makro, Makro often has the exact same items for sale and is almost always cheaper, looking at the queues at that store Takealot is hardly crushing it.

Traditionally Takealot delivers obviously.

As dj2381 said.

I used to order and collect from Takelot in Cape Town but am doing so less and less, their service has become much poorer in my experience and their pricing is more often than not more expensive than other places.

Went to Makro across the road last Friday, and looking at the number of people in the shop and the till queues they didn't look all that crushed to me. Have not used their online service but it sounds like that is piss poor, but Takealot is catching up on that front.
