How the heck do MWEB do this ?

I've had something similar before... but a simple reset of the router an PC sorted that one out...

Happened to me a while back.

I switch between accounts all the time (MWEB and AxxessLite) but I don't have the problem anymore.

GL sorting it! If I think of anything I will let you know!

Hey... just a thought... have you checked your actual adapter DNS settings ? Sometimes it has been configured there, and no matter what you set the router to, it will always have the adapter used to connect to it override it.

You need to select the adapter used to connect to the router with, select its properties, select the IPV4 properties and set it to "Obtain DNS Server Addresss Automatically"... and OK. Vista and Windows 7 do not need a reboot / logoff+on, but XP does.

And try again... it is the only thing I can think of...

Thanks. I tried that ... did an ipconfig/flushdns and rebooted. Changed router DNS to OpenDNS as well as on all network adapters. Still get Mweb landing page ! I hear they can lock routers in but they tell me only if the router was purchased from them .

PROBLEM SOLVED !!!!
Went to Telkom Shop this morning and signed up for a 9Gb capped account and got a new Netgear router.
I have not changed my line at all but my speedtest results have never been better. My network I/O is up from 2kbps(!!) to over 300kbps !
Well done Telkom. Mweb ... you lost a customer by telling me last night I was at fault !
Incidentally I had the old router tested at Telkom .... it's fine but Mweb told me it was faulty and hence I kept getting their landing page. !
All in all, I'm sure the tech support from Telkom cannot possibly be worse than what I got from Mweb

I have an uncapped account with Mweb.
Recently I purchased a backup from Afrihost.
When I enter the Afrihost details I get an Mweb landing page telling me I have entered the incorrect details !
I have reset the router ( Billion 800VGT) to factory defaults several times with no luck.
I have changed DNS settings and flushed the DNS cache. No luck.
I have confirmed the username and password with Afrihost.

All roads lead to an Mweb landing page http://landingpages.mweb.co.za/MWebHomeIncorrectUsernameorPasswordPage/tabid/817/Default.aspx

Can anyone shed some light on this. The router does not belong to Mweb as I had it before I had a moment of madness and signed up with them.

Hi matshelane,

Could you send me your MWEB details please so that I can investigate this for you.

Regards
MWEB Guy

I hope they cleared the browser cache before embarking on a wild goose chase. Many times the web display just get grabbed from the local browser cache. I experience the problem frequently with OVI automatic sign on or the Google failed to be reach page. Clear cache problem solved.

9GB is not much. KZ3 will kill that in a week+.

Sure it doesn't sound like much but after analysing my last years data from Mweb uncapped I saw I was never using more than about 8 gigs per month anyway. I'm not an online gamer or a newsgroup junkie. All I run is an electronic trading app and I trade crude oil futures through a broker in Chicago. The amount of data coming in is small ... it's just price and tick data that supplies info to my charts and trading platform.
About 10 days ago the data just stopped coming through in the day. Queried it with Mweb who said the data server must be having problems. Now this is the server that supplies tick and price data straight from the NYSE, Globex and Nasdaq to the whole world so if it were down then the world's financial system would be down ! My guess is their new mangement software identified it as something that needed heavy shaping and my pleas fell on deaf ears. I don't want to bash Mweb ... I had pretty good service over the last year but the minute I had a serious problem I was treated like a schoolkid.
All in all, I see very few complaints here about Telkom as an ISP. A 9Gb account from Telkom is just a few rand more than Mweb ancapped anyway and my trading app downloaded all the price data I lost last week before I could finish a cigarette. I don't think the perfect ISP exists ... we all make trade-offs according to our personal needs.

Sure, Telkom is on their own SAIX backbone, therefore the speed, reliability is better and cost higher than the rest. In your case the reliability is the key factor, in my case all I need and ask for is lots of cheap data for business and entertainment. A constant experience is for me of more value than very high speed whether is at 100KB/s or better is fine. This Up and downs from Mweb are a killer and they stand to loose many more clients if this carry on for much longer. A few weeks ago it was still all OK. Now no more it seems.

Make sure that the page in your browser isn't cached, often the landing page is cached and it is then pulled up by the browser.
Was just gonna say maybe he should clear his browsing history, cookies etc... & make sure that it's not an mweb site set as his default page

I did all that .... even tried different browsers ... downloaded Safari and Firefox from scratch and made sure they did not import IE settings ... home page was never mweb. Still got the Mweb landing page

I've since discovered the culprit is Mweb's client access server which locks your router into them although they deny it 'till they're blue in the face. I'm not a total noob ... I have an IT degree and worked in the industry for IBM, HP and Intel for 15 years.

I really don,t see how that is even possible for them to do that

Neither do I, specially if you connect via another account. I still say it was the cache or maybe modem settings, my router was never locked onto Mweb ever, I could change to any other ISP as and when I please at will by either changing modem settings or via PPPoE. A referral to say a failed Google main page always worked out to be the cache and by clearing the cash and cookies the problem was solved. Anyway, the issue is now resolved.

Oh that's lovely

I wonder how many people are gonna get caught with that....

Hi, I can assure you all that we do not remotely lock any of our customers routers.

Please. If you were such an expert, you'd know what you're claiming is impossible. The router can't be "locked" unless it has special firmware from the ISP. It uses the settings it's given, by you. It only accepts settings from inside your own network, unless you specifically set it to be configurable from the outside.

So please, enlighten us how someone coud "lock" your router, how does it work?

Correct.Had exactly the same issue as OP a while back and after clearing cache and cookies in Chrome all worked fine
