I was wondering after watching last night's game (Spain vs Portual) - how does a team prepare to face spain and hope to beat them? And what are the best tactics that a team can use? Should they pressure them up the field? Play route 1 football? Also try keep possession? Play on the counter? What do you guys think? Coz at this rate they are looking rather unstoppable...

Seems like you're hyping them up to be more than they are - I mean they did lose to Switzerland :D

Spain won't win this cup, trust me :)

I think Portugal just made them look good.
They gave the ball away rather than Spain taking the ball from them.

Also the ref was not interested in giving away free kicks and Portugal then wasnt interested in tackling for the ball.
They did play well last night, but although Edwardo had an awesome game, 1 - 0 with upto 70% ball possession was a bit below average with the calibre of strikers in the Spanish team.

Had Portugal scored in the dying minutes and the coach pulling of Villa, they would have been out........ but anyway.

How to beat Spain? Easy, if Paraguay has a good game, they can take em out, Germany will annihilate Spain.

I would like Spain to win.
But, though they have won 3 games in a row, they were not convincing.
Against Portugal, they created once good chance, and even luck helped them there with a rebound.
Spain are playing with no real width, teams are boxing themselves in the centre and stopping them.

not a big fan of spain but man that striker of theirs is incredible (the one that scored the goal last night) villa or something ... his previous shots at goal was very impressive and when he finally got one in, it was just brilliant.

not sure who they facing next but i don't think they will win this world cup, i'm a big brazil fan and even though they don't have all they superstars of past they are a well oiled team and very aggressive when looking for goals.

i think this year it will be between brazil and germany ...

back to your question.... just do what switzerland did :D or look at the tapes from last years con fed cup ... i think usa beat them last year as well.

Not really bigging them up more than they deserve - and yes they DID lose to switzerland but i will call that a blip..hehehe. I hope paraguay DO have a good game against them on Friday then hopefully they can be out but i think its a bridge too far for them to cross.

How to beat Spain?

Practice your dives. Clutch at your face and roll around on the floor. Spain have had two red cards sorted this way.

And if you do get booked for one of these events run up and kick Torres square in the nads - in other words, earn that red card properly.

Simple answer?

It is VERY VERY hard to beat Spain.

Spain are like Barcelona. People always have lots to say about their possession football but they dont understand, if Spain hold 75% of the possession the other team can do nothing. It is how Barcelona defend, WITH THE BALL.

Also people dont realise that Spain has has not lost a single game from 2006 - 2009 until they slipped up against the USA and now Switzerland.

That is a massive achievement. To only lose 2 games in 4 years!

FORCA ESPANA!

+1. Best form of defence is attack. Opposition can't score goals against you if they never have the ball.

So i guess the best way to beat spain is to hold the ball yourselves, dont let them have it - but this isn't how Inter beat Barca, Inter beat barca by not having the ball and just parking all 11 men behind it...seems hardly possible for 90mins in a World Cup Game

Way to beat Spain? Simple, stop Villa and Spain will have no other way of scoring :p

Very solid defence and fast counter attacks. Neither puyol or pique are that quick so if you can hit them on the counter you can expose them. Problem is I don't see any side in this comp with the kind of defence that could accomplish what inter did to barca. Only that comes close is probably paraguay and brazil the others all are suspect.
