how to build your own remote switch

Hi guys

I'm trying to find info on building my own remote switch for the Sony cameras that take a "D" shaped 10pin input. The original sony one is called the RM AV2 (http://www.sony.co.uk/product/cac-other-accessories/rm-av2) . However the shape and functionality of this switch does not suit my need. I'd like to build a simple switch that does the following:
1. Turn on/off camera
2. Start/stop record

Any ideas where to start. I think the first thing is to find where I can source the "D" type input part - I'm in Cape Town so any recommendations would be helpful. Then find out how the wiring works to enable the two functions I need.

It may be easier to get the simple remote from camerastuff.co.za
 
I've checked. They dont have a simple remote with that "D" type connection. And the original sony one doesn't fit my requirements. What I want to do is mount the camera on a helmet, hence I need a switch that's small and also one that can tell me that the unit is recording without me having to look at the switch itself, so something that I can feel with my fingers that its turned on/off is required.
