My mom now 75 does not own a tv for the last 10 years. First the SABC is still invoicing her the full R250 instead of the R70 rand for people over 70 They software cant see that a person is over 70 and must be invoiced the lower amount. Now we want to cancel the tv licence but it is imposible they want to know what happened to the tv before they can do anything. Is it a good idea to deliver the 20year old tv to the SABC. Any advice

You need an affidavit from the police station - then fax it and email it to them 300x until they confirm its cancelled.

Good luck. Lets us know how to do it. Last time I tried to do it for my Dad who is working in the States, I was told I had a better chance of doing it when he was dead than while he is alive. I needed not only an affidavit from the cops but also proof of who I sold his TV too and that person TV lisense.

We just gave up and continue to pay it each year (year number 5 so far).

WHAT! That is crazy and . There must be some way in getting rid of the TV Lisense payment. It's like trying to get off the SARS list.

The SABC wants to even charge you a tv licence if you own a moblile phone or a computer because you can still recieve tv broadcast on these devices

I'd just send them the affidavit with a cancellation letter... and then tell them to shove it... if they send letters from lawyers, ignore them.... they can't sue you for doing nothing wrong.

And according to SABC:

Q: When is a TV licence no longer required? What must one do to cancel a licence?

A: When one has sold or otherwise disposed of one's television set(s) a TV licence is no longer required. The SABC must be notified on a prescribed form (affidavit) of the changed circumstances. No licence is cancelled while moneys are still outstanding on an account.

Good luck, and tell us when you catch the Lepricorn.

I have been fighting with the SABC for about 4 years now, they insist I owe them R3000+ in license fees. The funny part is that I never even took out a TV license.

I faxed them through affidavits and eventually they have canceled it. Even though I never even had a ****ing TV license.

They are useless but yeah fax them a affidavit and wait.

This is the response i got for the SABC when i sent through an email request to cancel the license. They require certain information to be in the Affidavit. I did not pay the current year as they took thier sweet a$$ time to respond.

We acknowledge receipt of your request to have your TV licence cancelled. In order to enable the SABC to consider your request, please supply us with an affidavit (sworn statement/solemn declaration). The following particulars are required in terms of the Broadcasting Act, No 4 of 1999, as amended:
1. The date (month and year) from which you are no longer using and/or in possession of ANY television set.
2. An explanation of what has become of the TV set that was previously in your possession and licensed in your name. Because you have donated it as a gift TV Licences requires the particulars (name, address and ID number) of the new owner, as well as his television licence number, if applicable.
3. Since many households have more than one TV, set we also require confirmation that, apart from the set in respect of which this cancellation has been requested, you have NO other TV set in your possession. Without such confirmation your request cannot be processed.
Please mail or fax the information to the SABC. Once we have received the requested documentation, the matter will receive our urgent attention. Feel free to call our Customer Service Centre on (011) 330-9555 if you need more information. Please quote your TV licence number in any further communication with the SABC on this matter.

What I would like to know is how will they verify that all the info they have is correct?
