Spoke to technical dept from Telkom and they said I must speak to sales to find out how far I am from the exchange.
The lady that upped my profile sais I must phone them because she thinks there might be a closer one to which they can connect me.

Reason for this is everytime there is bad weather (lightning or rain or thunder or all together) my line drops from 10mb to 8mb.
The I have to phone in and up the profile to 10mb again.

Last week thursday there was techie at our work and he check my line via his cell and said that I'm far away from the exchange and that was the "closest" one to me hence the drop in line everytime there is bad weather.

He said I must try and sync at 8mb cause that will eliminate the dropping of my profile everytime.
Does anyone know if there is truth in this or is my line physically bad or must I try and let them connect me to a closer exchange?

Grouter answered you already.

Do not think you can do much to change that.
If you really want to,
a. Replace the cable from the Telkom post outside property to inside your house.
This is not legal, a lot of work.
b. Ensure router is connected to Telkom line where it enters your property. {This is easy and solve many issues}

It is quite normal for you to be at +- 2-3 km.
DSL will work up to +- 5 km.

If you were in UK you could use this to see where the exchange is.

It must be some years now since I came to this forum to ask where to get the PSTN exchange map for za.
It must exist. Still have no such resource. Maybe someone else does.

In locations where I had to assist, you do some work and find the exchange. Not too hard to find with google maps.

I use about 500gb a month and there is no LTE available with such a package atm.

I use my Rain LTE, for about that amount for R250 a month.
only limitation is during 6PM till 11PM its regular time, so it goes up to R50 per GB,

otherwise, fibre not an option for you?

We're in exactly the same boat. Best advice is accept the 8gb and live the 5 years longer that trying to get the extra 2gb is going to take off your life expectancy.

It is very unlikely that you will not already be connected to the closest "concentration point". It used to be the "exchange" but that is no longer always accurate because of the deployment on fibre nodes closer to the customer points.
The exchange map, is not public information, for very good reasons of security etc.
The line could have deteriorated, but to get Telkom to investigate, fix, or replace anything to do with copper now is not an easy task.
what is your telephone prefix associated with the line? (the first six digits)? May be able to help. (011 - xxx-)

Three Rivers Arcon Park area. There are fibre projects underway in the area.
Will need your full tel number si if you want PM the number to me to be a bit more accurate. No, there is no closer exchange available.

Why is it that my line speed is fine just until there is bad weather and then drops to 8mb profile?

Because there is a fault somewhere on the cable run that probably gets wet. Now unless you can get Telkom to do an investigation and find that point, the line attenuation change will trigger the ASSIA system to drop the line speed downwards to the best it decides is achievable.

Yeah there's a fault somewhere on your cable, I had the exact same issue until I got my cable replaced from my home to the pole.
Phone and complain there's noise on your landline and you need the entire cable replaced
