How to determine exchange distance?

Yeah there's a fault somewhere on your cable, I had the exact same issue until I got my cable replaced from my home to the pole.
Phone and complain there's noise on your landline and you need the entire cable replaced

If Geoff is using the term "cable run" - does it mean from pole to the house or underground cause the cable from pole to house was installed new 2 years ago

It could be anywhere from the telephone jack in your home all the way to the exchange. If it is the "drop wire" from the pole to your house, then it is a simple exercise to fix. But if it is in the cable network, it will require a special investigation to find.

Whenever I've had a problem with static or noise on my line that affects my ADSL, I log a fault saying that I cannot make any phonecalls but I do not mention ANYTHING about my internet. Within a day or 2 I always have a Telkom technician at my door. If you log a fault and mention your internet connection or ADSL then you will never hear back from Telkom. It seems they are only interested in fixing copper faults if it directly affects their voice revenue (even though I never actually use my line for making phonecalls).

Spoke to technical dept from Telkom and they said I must speak to sales to find out how far I am from the exchange.
The lady that upped my profile sais I must phone them because she thinks there might be a closer one to which they can connect me.

Reason for this is everytime there is bad weather (lightning or rain or thunder or all together) my line drops from 10mb to 8mb.
The I have to phone in and up the profile to 10mb again.

Last week thursday there was techie at our work and he check my line via his cell and said that I'm far away from the exchange and that was the "closest" one to me hence the drop in line everytime there is bad weather.

He said I must try and sync at 8mb cause that will eliminate the dropping of my profile everytime.

Does anyone know if there is truth in this or is my line physically bad or must I try and let them connect me to a closer exchange?
I have poor speed after switch to VDSL connection as per this thread. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=158&topicid=201738&page_no=2#1624742
Most likely this is because I'm too far from the cabinet.
What is the most practical way for me to find out where the cabinet is, so I could sanity check the distance?
For example if the cabinet ends up being just outside of my house, then something would be very definitely wrong.

First use the sw suggested previously to work out the approximate distance from your place to the concentration point. Then you have to play detective, and try and work out the routing of the cable to find the cabinets in your area. If this sort of looks right them that is probably the one.

But once you know, what do you want to do with the info? The fly in the ointment is Telkom's ASSIA setup, which will always adjust the data rates according to its own measurements downwards.

That is precisely why I have never upgraded because I know that the nearest VDSL node to me is twice as far away as the node I am currently connected and all I will end up doing is paying them more.
